Look at this gorgeous cover for Keywords/Keyimages in Graphic Medicine!! Thanks to Ian Williams for giving us permission to use his image on the cover, which captures brilliantly the concept & structure of the book. Briana Martino (@briwok.bsky.social) & I are grateful & thrilled!

Book cover for Keywords/Keyimages in Graphic Medicine edited by Lisa Diedrich and Briana Martino. The image on the cover is from Ian Williams, & is a version of an image from his book The Bad Doctor, a graphic narrative based on his own experience with OCD. A boy is in bed with his hands folded in prayer & his thoughts take the form of a sefirot surrounding his head.

The magnitude of this piece cannot be overstated. "Rather than combating the rapid spread of health misinfo w/facts & clarity, Kennedy is amplifying it. The consequences aren’t abstract. They are measured in lives lost, disease outbreaks & an erosion of public trust that will take years to rebuild."

More are united around a simple message: RFK Jr should not be HHS Sec. His decisions undermine our public health capacity and put lives and health at risk.

As 6 former Surgeon Generals argue:

"He has rejected science, misled the public and compromised the health of Americans."

Audre Lorde makes a similar claim for Black women's survival & feminist activism: "Rather than siphoning off energies in vain attempts to connect with women who refuse to deal with their own history or ours, Black women need to choose the areas where that energy can be most effective."

This is devastating but hard to think of more important journalism. 18,457 children have been killed in Gaza (many more not accounted for). Here, The Guardian prints their names and beautiful faces and tells us what they were like before Israel stole their lives. www.theguardian.com/world/ng-int...

Never forget that Dolly Parton gave a million bucks for covid research at the *very start* of the pandemic—including money that helped fund the development of the Moderna vaccine.

Yes. I'll also never forget when she was filmed getting the shot. The doctor was so nervous & she was so cool.
Praying for Dolly. She is the best of us.

We saw RFK Jr's utter disregard for the people who work at HHS after the CDC shooting. He literally does not care about these people or value their work. We should be shocked by this show of contempt for people, but it is all part of Trump & Project 2025's sadistic "put them in trauma" treatment.

Many "top PH professionals—people we have worked with during crises—have resigned or retired early. They describe a culture of intimidation, where scientific findings are censored, evidence is disregarded & career officials are pressured to rubber stamp conclusions that are not backed by science."
lisadiedrich.bsky.social
"It is essential to note that good science & public health require not only evidence but also people—the scientists, public health professionals & civil servants whose expertise protects millions of Americans. Yet under Kennedy’s leadership, the HHS workforce has been badly damaged."

Yep. This on graphics processing is ironic: “For much of the AI boom, there have been whispers about Nvidia’s frenzied dealmaking. The chipmaker bolstered the market by pumping money into dozens of AI startups, many of which rely on Nvidia’s graphics processing units to develop & run their models.”

I would say the person offering the most Stuart Hall-like commentary of the contemporary cultural & political moment in the US is @tressiemcphd.bsky.social. Look at what she is doing in terms of both content & form. Like Hall, she provides nuanced analysis in accessible formats/modalities.

Stuart Hall took Thatcherism seriously & tried to understand its affective & aspirational appeal. Trumpism operates differently, as @cnewf.bsky.social notes, but the need to offer a cultural & political counter-strategy is key. I keep thinking about Hall’s adept use of new forms of media.

Great call to arms by @cnewf.bsky.social, following the tactic of Jed Esty's "Future of Decline" by looking to Stuart Hall & the New Left, & urging us to forego "private agency within our universities" in favor of "collective agency by running them."

The Trump admin has lied about this case from the start — and now it can't get its story straight about next steps for Mr. Abrego Garcia.

This reeks of a political prosecution and the courts must continue to ensure his due process rights are protected.

Stuart Hall on “Studying the Conjuncture" is so good: “If you don't agree there is a good degree of openness & contingency to every historical conjuncture, you don't believe in politics. You don't believe that anything can be done." youtu.be/bHpht1nNtB0?...

If you are a supporter and reader of @contingent-mag.bsky.social one of the biggest things you can do to help us at the moment is get this CFP to the NTT folks in your life. The fracturing of social media has made it very difficult to get the word out esp. to adjuncts and VAPs.

Exploring how keywords/keyimages “act as a kind of structure” is of course drawing on Raymond Williams’s formulation of keywords as theory/method. Keywords/keyimages is our neologism to capture what makes comics & graphic narratives different.
