I would also encourage them to read the paper "outside in", first trying to understand the point that the authors are trying to make, and then critically assess the methods they chose and if their results sufficiently support what they are stating.

I don't really have resources at hand, but I'd say my biggest takeaway was to consider why you're reading the paper before moving past the abstract, and try to pose a couple of questions you want to answer, then pick the sections you read based on those questions.
