I just "played" a literal hour-long dialogue tree in Horizon Forbidden West. This game goes hard.

This year, I finished a whopping 32 games, just about tripling my previous record. Among the 32 are: the entire Killzone series, the entire Battlefield series (except for #6), the entire Wipeout series, the entire Infamous series, and the entire Crysis series.

I’ve heard claims in a few different (decade-old) GDC talks that recording DX12 command lists in parallel worked (works?) better than using DX11 deferred contexts in parallel. But I don’t understand why.
Is there some gotcha in the DX11 spec that doesn’t allow drivers to do the optimal thing?

I’m about 20 hours in to Horizon Forbidden West and really enjoying it. Fighting the robot dinosaurs doesn’t seem to get old. I particularly like the “thunk” sound it makes when you get a critical hit 😁

Thoughts on OpenCL:
1. If what you want is a cross-platform way to run code on a GPU using a real programming language (real pointers, etc.), it seems perfect
2. Using OpenCL to run code on the CPU is a worthless feature
3. OpenCL seems to have been abandoned without replacement 😢
