I thought this article was pretty good, but I thought the tone was a bit misleading, because it is, in fact, illegal to run an unregistered church in China. So another equally valid way to frame this story is “China enforces Chinese laws”

1. If what you want is a cross-platform way to run code on a GPU using a real programming language (real pointers, etc.), it seems perfect
2. Using OpenCL to run code on the CPU is a worthless feature
3. OpenCL seems to have been abandoned without replacement 😢
