Spent the day wandering through rain-soaked Seattle, and in a used bookstore found several volumes of medieval art.

I wrote an essay about the death of a best friend, Gilgamesh, the Venerable Bede, soul journeys in medieval ballads and the hope of a better world. My MIL called this “one of the best essays I’ve ever read on substack.” I’d be thrilled if you read it. bibliollcollege.substack.com/p/the-shadow...

London’s Crossing Sweepers: The Unsung Heroes of the Victorian Streets
In the muck-strewn maze of 18th and 19th-century London, where horse-drawn carriages ruled and street sanitation barely existed, one group of individuals stood ready with broom in hand: the crossing sweepers. Armed with nothing more than brushes, persistence, and a good dose of cheek, these resourceful workers offered pedestrians a way to navigate the city without the indignity of muddy boots or worse—an unfortunate encounter with a pile of horse manure.

Enjoyed the linked essay/preface a lot, and was saddened by it, too.
Exciting news! I'm joining my wife's substack as a regular contributor, and today I'm sharing the preface to a book I'm writing on the joys of reading, where I lead you on a journey through my favorite books.

“The ‘great books’ are for everyone; autodidactism is something to celebrate, no matter what one’s education level or social status; it would help heal our world if we made an effort to foster a generation of Library Kids and Library Adults.” — Rachel Murphy (my wife)
