That makes me so happy to hear!! Thanks for leaving a comment it means a lot to me. I used to work in an art studio making the general public do lil crafts, even though they were often nervous, it’s so fun to make stuff even if you think you cant! I love seeing ppl try their best. I miss doing that!

omgg I never drew humans (well, I still dont) so I'd give my friends so much wolf/cat sona art as a tyke. The horror and joys of seeing it still on their walls in our 20's... Its special!

I definitely connect more to things that feel a bit flawed, they feel more human. I'm like oo thats just like me for real.... Not that I'm unimpressed by all the impeccably skilled people!!

I remember I was at my best friend's bday party decades ago and his cousin gave him a card with a drawing of him. He was drawn as a mermaid. He was like "hey, why am I a mermaid?" and she said "Well, I cant draw legs." it kicked ass and everyone loved it!! He saved it forever! Just do your best :)

to be honest I've always found it kinda fun to end up being a little bit crappy at whatever I try to do... Takes a lot of pressure off, and I feel like everyone can tell when you're doing something just for the love of the game

I actually did end up majoring in special & alternative education! 😁 I don’t work with kids at the moment since I’m just doing art, but I loved being a calming presence like my heroes were for me

Something that had made me so angry was being used all these years to help kids express their feelings, to love and dote on, it was a whole character in his classroom and I had never even known! I’d forgotten about the duck, but he’d cherished it for me all those years. He really was the best!

“Jeremy you look like you have something to say, Sam could you pass him the answer duck?” He said to the students. Sam handed him my duck sculpture and the other student discussed his feelings about the reading. Every time the students had something to say, they held onto my duck for support.

Years later after graduating, my friend and I popped in to say hello to him. It was last period so he still had a class going. “Oh hey you two,” he said like us walking in was completely normal, and turned back to the class.

I was so fucking mad, I took the duck back and walked across the hall to vent to Mr. Conway. He listened to everything I said and validated my feelings. “If it’s alright with you, could I keep that duck?” He asked. I said sure, cause I didn’t even want to look at it ever again. Washed my hands of it

I was so mad. I stayed after class and demanded to know his reasoning. “It’s a duck in a cage. Who cares?” He smirked. I said I made the duck, painted it, built the cage, I put genuine effort into it & felt he was bullying me. He said he didn’t realize that, & would regrade it. Got it back with a D-

So I made a clay replica duck, painted one half a male mallard and one half had female plumage. I built a cage to put it in and wrote some gendery vocab all over the bars and described my reasoning with an essay (oh to be 14.) felt good about it and turned it in. Got it back with an F grade.

Now I didn’t like the book much and couldn’t relate to Holden, so I struggled a bit. There’s one part of the book where he’s somewhat contemplating gender and looking out over a lake with ducks. That was the only part I really had to go on,

If I told a joke that flopped he’d not send me out. Funny to look back on. Anyways we quarreled quite a bit & he’d read my essays aloud to the class while laughing at me, no one else got the honor. After reading catcher in the rye, he had us “make an object” as a final project for the semester

Another Conway tale, though he’s a side character in this one: I had an English teacher Mr. L who was my sworn enemy. He absolutely hated me, & would find any reason to send me out of class to go sit in the hallway. Most commonly if I told a joke that garnered more laughter than his previous joke

as a neurodivergent & also weird kid school was hell for me, though these days I struggle to remember the names of all the teachers who bullied me. But the three that treated me like a person have never left me. Now more than ever, I hope you all try your best to stay unsquishable!

That rules! I bet she was so excited to share it with you! Felt like most teachers tell you art’s a waste of time and wont take you anywhere, so when you have someone tell you otherwise it’s so special!! Even my grade school art teacher didn’t believe in me & gave me c’s and d’s 😭
