On more exciting days it would mean your mom would need to go to the library in some slightly far-away suburban town to access their phonebook and other public records to find where someone lived. This was better because you were in a library and could at least read about other things.

My mom did this when I was a kid and being a PI is when your you sit in your mom's car outside a suburban house doing your math homework while you wait for a guy to mow his lawn so your mom can take a picture of him mowing his lawn to prove he's not disabled.
