Dems need to fight for meaningful improvement in public schools and in structural socioeconomic change.

But this is key: There is a dangerous naivete in adopting RW talking points on education, given the rapid and destructive progress that has been made on Project 2025.

Our socioeconomic system doesn't offer equal opportunity, so schools can't. Fantastic income inequality and how schools are funded can't be solved by schools -- or by denigrating schools. Have the Dems failed to fix the larger system: yes.

I first encountered this concept while learning Cabo Verdean Kriolu to talk to my (elementary-aged) students, & not knowing that there was an English equivalent, we just decided that “otramanhan” could be added to our English.

Other keynote speakers I saw at the same conference (different years): Frank McCourt (A+ speaker), Ted Turner (stated in his keynote that if he had known about overpopulation, he’d have had fewer kids, which is a weird vibe ESPECIALLY when you are addressing teens?!?).

Probably after that I went back to making sure middle and high school students didn’t play with the interpretation earpieces that are attached to all the GA seats, which was a not insignificant part of the staffing gig.
