Once I find a design I really like, it's important to lock it in by drawing as many sketches of the character as possible — from different angles and with various emotions.

I'm sketching completely random characters while an idea slowly takes shape in my head — waiting for that moment when I catch the right emotion. On the right side of the image, I’ve already caught the vibe, and now I’m heading to Wikipedia to look up info and references.

First and foremost, it's very important for me to try drawing as many different kinds of creatures as possible. Each species can convey a certain emotion on its own, which can then be used as a foundation for building a character's personality.
