LN Engineering seeks to provide innovative “no-compromise” solutions to the automotive aftermarket to exceed OEM requirements.
When rebuilding any M96 or M97 engine, it's important to also have your intermediate shaft inspected. Many fail our inspection for runout, which would have resulted in increased bearing wear and potentially an IMS bearing failure.

This engine became what was to be known as Cayman X, with the first 4.2 liter MA1 engine. What's important about this picture is that you can see the healthy, stock Alusil cylinder bore, shown here with about 15,000 miles and dozens of hours of track use.

People don't realize it's been 20 years since we came up with the very first fix the for Porsche IMS bearing. Our original quadruple bearing fix required modification of the shaft itself. Things have come a long way since then.

We recently had a customer want to block off his air injection but didn't like the way people just put in a brass plug, leaving a blind hole in the port. We decided to make up some aluminum ones that could then be blended into the port. Simple but clean solution.

Having trouble rev matching while braking? The BRS Throttle Pedal Spacer is completely transformative, at least according to one very happy customer.

When magnified 100X, you can see the silicon particles in a Lokasil or Alusil cylinder. One of the modes of failure is when particles fracture and there aren't enough remaining ones to support the required oil film for the pistons and rings.

We know magnetic drain plugs are supposed to help make inspections easier, but for sure this is the last thing anyone wants to see in their engine's sump. Now available for most German makes and models.

We can't take credit for taking this photo, but it's worth a share. Now you can tell the difference between a crack and just a casting mark when scoping your bores for scoring.

After heat treat, grinding, and inspection, each IMS Solution goes through a meticulous cleaning process before receiving it's signature DLC coating. Remember, there is only one IMS Solution!

There is no such thing as a rebuild engine light, but when it does come time to rebuild your Porsche engine, don't just remanufacture it or settle for a factory replacement. But there is a Substitute.

The level of misinformation out there on the Internet is amazing. These photos were sent to us today by someone who had a PPI done on a 996 they were looking to purchase. The shop that did the bore scope inspection said this was ok. It's not. This guy dodged a bullet!

Don't neglect your AOS or PCV valve. Excessive oil consumption can lead to deposits and poor performance. Use Top Tier premium fuels regularly and Injector Defender every 2-3k miles on MY2000 and newer cars.

Don't forget to mark or torque stripe your fasteners when you are done (and take a photo too while you are at it).

For more silver bullets when it comes to rebuilding an M96 engine, Rennvision's Focus On: M9X Engine Assembly should be your go to source.

Oil Consumption - this is not a fun topic. Just ask Ford, who is facing a class action lawsuit related to excessive oil consumption. There are 3 key areas when it comes to oil consumption. We will even cover some advice for dealing with oil consumption.

Every product, proudly manufactured right here in the USA, goes through an exacting process starting with an idea that is prototyped, tested, and then put into production, only after our Technical Director has signed off on it.

Timing chains should never, ever be reused, especially on engines with bore scoring. Oil consumption leads to sooty oil. Soot is the #1 contributor to timing chain stretch.

Monitoring fuel trims are important to make sure you aren't washing down your cylinder bores of critical lubrication. Tony Callas has trained thousands of techs in his career. Let Tony educate you on fuel trims in this video.

If you have a 2006-2008 Boxster, Cayman, or 997, IMS bearing failures are rare, but they can happen. Replacement isn't necessary though - just have the grease seal removed (it's submerged in engine oil) to extend it's service life.

If you find plastic debris in your 97-02 Boxster or 99-01 996 oil filter or sump that looks like this, it's likely your cam timing deviation is bad. Good thing it's easy to keep an eye on this without ever inspecting your sump or oil filter.

Not something you really ever want to see in your Porsche engine. Something tells me that you really didn't need a magnetic drain plug here to tell you this engine was toast.

Another weak spot on the M96 engine is the intermediate shaft itself, beyond the bearing. As you can see here, it's a multi-piece design swedged onto a piece of tubing, with no keys or indexing. Inspection followed by pinning is a must.

Early on we learned that high rpms or using thick oil is a game of russian roulette on the M96 engine. Every engine we build gets a billet chromoly heat treated and shot-peened oil pump drive to prevent this costly failure.
