Maybe run a small batch test? Pick randomly and send people the invite, see how things shake out for a week,adjust as needed, then open it a bit more?

I think another part of the problem is that so many are raised to see ANY amount of struggle on anothers part as an inconvenience to themselves whether it actually impacts them or not
