Locke Toilet Garden

At the end of her town tours for the Locke Foundation, Connie King would usually make her infamous toilet garden the final destination for her group. Connie’s whimsical garden has been relocated to the Chinese Vegetable Demonstration Garden.

Joe Schoong School House/Chinese School Museum

The schoolhouse was founded by the Kao Ming Tong in 1915, functioning as both a meeting place and a town hall. In 1926, it became an after-school institution for children to learn Cantonese.

Dai Loy Gambling House Museum

During the prohibition era, Locke became popular for illegal bars, gambling, casinos, and opium dens due to the lack of police in the town. Once an illegal gambling casino, the museum now safeguards many artifacts.

The Before & After at Locke
The Star Theater is located up on River Road. In 1915, when the "town" consisted of only 4 buildings to serve the workers of the adjacent, the Star Theater (The Opera House) was the artistic focal point for Locke's Chinese population.

After the Transcontinental Railroad's completion in 1869, thousands of Chinese workers helped tame the Delta. The soft muck hampered the horses, prompting the development of the turtle horse shoe. Its replica is currently on display at Locke Boarding House Museum.

Walnut Grove sits along the Sacramento River between Sacramento and Stockton. Its levee-lined road protects the town from winter floods. During its peak, Delta towns like Rio Vista, Isleton, Ryde, Hood—and Walnut Grove—were home to many Chinese and Japanese immigrant communities.
