I would just like to say that Katie Hoody's NYTimes crossword puzzle today has an absolutely beautiful grid. Nice puzzle too! But just look at that in black and white.

A 15x15 grid of black-and-white squares suitable for a crossword puzzle. The grid has 90° rotational symmetry. Each corner of the grid holds a stack of three 10-letter-long entries, arranged in a pinwheel and filling the entire outside of the grid. The ring formed by those 3-by-10 stacks is held together by a central 9-by-9 square whose black squares are all singletons, each surrounded by 8 white squares, and all arranged a knight's move apart from each other, in the manner of a 5-harness satin weave.

The specific page that prompted me to post about this book is the description of how the first stellation of the rhombic dodecahedron can be dissected into six congruent pieces (and, in passing, that it can also fill space)
Someone, somewhere, perhaps in the mid-19th century, made the marvellous discovery that the ends of the diagonal burr sticks can be bevelled to produce a puzzle that, when assembled, is the first stellation of the rhombic dodecahedron. According to puzzle collector and historian Jerry Slocum, a puzzle of this sort was sold as early as 1875. The only patent on it that the author is aware of is Swiss Patent No. 245 402 to Iffland in 1946. The word intriguing is used frequently throughout this book to describe various polyhedral dissections, but none can outshine the brilliance of this simple dissection (Fig. 88). From one point of view, it may be regarded as a diagonal burr puzzle in which bevelling the ends of the pieces produces a totally unexpected and beautiful new shape. From another point of view, it is a surprising dissection of the stellated rhombic dodecahedron into six identical pieces that amazingly assemble and interlock!
