And some people changed their names entirely. My biggest brick wall was figuring out that my Hennigs used to be Schwittkowkis. FamilySearch assisted me by displaying a document that included "aka" along with both surnames. #FamilyHistory #ancestry #ancestors #family

Surnames were not changed at Ellis Island. Inspectors did not write down names but checked them against the ship's passenger list. Officials corrected mistakes in lists but did not alter surnames. #ancestry #FamilyHistory

PART ONE:
Before the 1900s, filling out forms was less common. Illiteracy made accurate information like birth dates difficult. Remembering dates became harder, especially during census years. In addition, town clerks would estimate ages when recording births, so earlier dates are more reliable.
