I can't stop thinking about this. We're pursuing zero fire risk in multifam, while tolerating much more in single-fam. People respond by building and living in single-fam, where they're exposed to not only one of the highest fire death risks in the developed world, but also TONS more car crash risk

I’m WFH today, so after dropping the girls I crossed the street to get a bus home. I’m lucky to live in a place where I can get a train or a bikeshare if the next bus is too far. Parking is pretty annoying in my nabe so that tends to motivate me to choose other modes.

Walked to happy hour, and now heading home (Metrorail). A guy followed me through the faregates by “tailgating” to not pay the fare. It was scary. The current Metro Lift program is tied to SNAP but is that really workable moving forward? #NationalWeekWithoutDriving

Metrorail to my office was fast, but now I’m sitting next to the cafeteria window watching many of my coworkers arrive by bike - and one just RAN up! I used to bike everywhere, I wonder if I could get back to that given my kid transport needs.

Day 4 of #NationalWeekWithoutDriving: we made the bus with no running, yelling, trips back, or detours! Today is the first day that last year’s Kids Ride Free cards won’t work for DC schoolchildren. Make sure to pick up your new cards at school!

At Dupont Circle station, people are riding the escalator in both directions at most times of day

I get to ride for free because I’m on the board of @wmata.com. So sometimes I do lazy stuff like jump on a bus to turn a 20 minute walk into a 2-stop ride 🤪

Needed to get from my office to somewhere else in downtown in 10 minutes, so I took a #Lime scooter. DC’s downtown is kind of spread out because our buildings are short. Bike and scooter share has transformed DC and cut many of my travel times in half. I love it!

Day 3 of #NationalWeekWithoutDriving. Waking up to a government shutdown. I’m married to an essential federal worker, so he still has to work, and pay Metro fares, but we don’t know when he will next get paid.

I’m already on trip 2 of the day. Lots of people still working hard in DC no matter what.

RECAP. I made 2 more trips today: walked to Dupont Circle to hang out with another @ggwash.org board member and talk strategy, and then took the train home. This was a long day, six trips == six different places to be at a specific time. Across 4 modes my OTP was 💯! 💅

I am now racing to work (not ideal how much I am sweating) to make a 1 pm meeting. I could hear the train leaving the station as I hit the escalator. 4 years ago that would have made my stress hit the roof. Now, Metro has an all-day frequent service pattern. Game changer. #NationalWeekWithoutDriving

The only plus of these appointments taking until 11:45 is that by then the southbound traffic on 270 had finally cleared - it was absolutely clogged at 9:45. The HOV lane there should be all hours. Well, fingers crossed this is the last of me posting about driving during #NationalWeekWithoutDriving

Day 2 of #NationalWeekWithoutDriving. We love our pediatrician, but her office is way out in Montgomery County. So this morning, I piled the kids in the car and drove them. I find parenting stuff often pushes me into the car - even though ironically my kids hate riding and always beg to bike.
