London innit!

Man on bike, seeking out London's elusive no-go zones (only Twitter knows where they be); laughing at architecture; bemoaning poor maintenance; delighting in improvised repairs. Also roaming the planning portals. #london #planning #cycling
Yes. The troubles in Northern Ireland didn't involve much bible study. Catholics weren't arguing with protestants over transubstantiation.

Thanks for the link. I'll have a look.

His best excuse would be "I knew he was a paedophile, but he was also the coolest party host. What to do?"

Who among us can say they've never made that calculation?

Yes. When I worked in a bookshop, it was the bus and train drivers who seemed most curious about the world. Whereas the academics tended to stick to their comfortable few inches of shelving, the transport workers were interested in everything.

A long tradition of learning for its own sake.

Many Labour voters would dispute the characterisation of their aspirations as 'unicorns' or 'a magic wand'.

Their complaints may not be in denial of the hard choices but in despair over what they see as pandering to racists - i.e. Labour making easy but bad choices, out of expediency not principle.

The revolution is spearheaded by Leftist typographers.

They're all trying a little too hard.

To think that post war Labour MPs were put through the mangle for pro-Soviet sympathies! Careers and reputations were destroyed for much less than the outright treasonous activities of many modern politicians.

Is treason only bad when it's from the left? From right and centre it's fine.

There seems to be a conflation of two issues.

1) "London has many areas in which a lone woman wouldn't feel safe to walk at night".

2) "London is a dangerous no-go zone".

1 is true, but it applies also to almost every city, town and village, and the roads between.

2 is the belief of nitwits.

For all Britain's faults, some of those positive stereotypes were well founded. Sadly, one of the first things I had to tell my Hungarian girlfriend (wife to be) was: what you have read from George Mikes, it no longer holds true.

All predators, but only the bear has a sense of decorum.

The mother bear is partial to alpha male human, heedless of the harm that being eaten by a female does to the latter's reputation on social media.
December 11, 2025 at 12:54 PM
The odd thing is, those who go for the alpha male vibe are the ones who seem least able to perform supposedly masculine tasks - rather than simply playing the role of pantomime alpha male.

Imagine being stuck in the wilderness with Boris Johnson, Donald Trump and Andrew Tate.

It starts before they are born, when the nurseries (that they may never sleep in) are painted pink or blue, and decorated with princesses and unicorns, or tractors and dinosaurs.

No wonder so many are unhappy with their assigned gender, loaded with pressures, expectations and horrid stereotypes.

'Normal' because it was assumed that, somewhere in the shadows, grey-suited men (conservatives and sticklers for process) would have a quite word whenever stability was threatened.

If those men ever existed, they've now passed, and the deep state is the domain of Kirby vacuum cleaner salesmen.

We still have quite a few of these. Can't bear to part with them.

It all those facsimiles wot make it fun.

White supremacists have a doomed business model. If a mixed race child is classified non-white, then all their offspring will be the same in perpetuity. As if Tesco was to declare anyone who shopped at Tesco and M&S as 'non-Tesco' (and their children). Maths says they'd soon have no customers.

Also, it's hardly a representative sample, those found in provincial high streets during working hours. [See 'Joris Bohnson']

I'll be checking out those films. Looks like a great resource.

Not recently. Firstly, OTHER THINGS had to be done. Secondly, returning from a funeral, my handlebar stem snapped (well, it is 45 years old). I landed on my shoulder, and am still a bit sore. It could have been a lot worse though. Cycling will resume soon.
November 21, 2025 at 11:43 PM
I was wondering what had happened to you. Welcome back!
November 21, 2025 at 9:48 AM
":::ERROR::: I am no longer supported since the most recent OS update. I have ordered a replacement refrigerator, you're welcome!"

My father (generally conservative, WWII vet) used to point to the Tory Party conference as proof that wisdom doesn't come with age.
November 7, 2025 at 6:33 PM
Reform politicians are 99% bananas. True fact!
November 6, 2025 at 9:27 AM
I expect they are basing all this on a mix of folk traditions, the bible, and perceived common sense.

Anyway, how would those studies work?

Rely on the school's own measurements? No!

Devise robust independent test? Torturing children in a controlled setting would be somewhat unethical.

My grandfather used to say "There's nothing so bad that the Daily Express can't make it worse"*. Same goes for X.

[*This was in the 50s, when the Express wasn't so awful.]
