We write about death, grief, and loss, and the fears that are wrapped up in these subjects. But our story looks at more quotidian fears, too: social anxiety, vulnerability, misunderstanding, rejection. Reading everyone's answers showed me how often fear drives so many of our stories.

It's scary because we know that writing about hard subjects has the potential to hurt. Writing often tackles difficult things, but it's still scary being aware of the many ways we could accidentally hurt a reader. So far, readers have been very encouraging, but we don't want to get complacent.

Some people have deeply held convictions; others are full of doubt. Some have been terribly wounded. Some hate the subjects. Contradictions and inconsistencies abound. And these subjects can govern a person's whole life. They are at once powerful and delicate. 🧵

We write a lot based on religion, myth, and afterlife beliefs. We do interviews, go to events, and do research on it, but still, it's SO scary to write within these contexts. #PretendPanel 🧵

I try to focus this account so it's for my readers, but hey writers:

NEVER sign a contract where the publisher keeps your rights indefinitely. For short stories, there should be a point when you can sell reprints.

and NEVER sign your movie/TV/etc adaptation rights to a publisher. Those are yours.
