Reminds me of a great quote from Kaveh Akbar - “There’s no difference to the outside world between a good guy and a bad guy behaving like a good guy.” Externally, performing decency is exactly the same as being decent

Maybe it’s more like fossil fuels—it has distinct utility while also causing immense harms, and it cannot simply be abandoned without other, better things in place. Idk, I just don’t know if abstinence is ultimately possible or effective

in a very oversimplified nutshell: the problems inherent to inductive reasoning. The tools we’ve developed that we call “science” are our best effort to overcome those problems when seeking general truths abt the world

The idea that trade is a zero sum game in which one trade party is the ‘winner’ and the other is the ‘loser’

3/3 Also, w/r/t Hank’s original point, how could genAI be leveraged to be addictive? One answer, I think, is reliance. the reliance on a problem-solving tool is the mechanism to achieve an addicted user base. You are welcome to disagree tho!

2/ if you rely on genAI to do cognitive work so extensively that it results in the atrophy of your cognitive capacity or will to use that capacity, is there a level of addiction present? My provisional answer is yes—I think in this context, reliance starts to look a lot like addiction.

What I’m thinking about is whether those distinct concepts actually start to collapse into each other w genAI specifically. I’m thinking there may be a point at which reliance or dependence on something becomes a kind of addiction. Could a tool seem so useful that it is turned to compulsively? 1/

I wonder if there’s a difference between ‘addicted to’ and ‘reliant on’ in this context

I read Looking for Alaska many years ago when I was 16. it was given to me by my best friend. It was incredibly formative for how I’ve gone on to make meaning in my life, & it introduced me to ideas that I desperately needed, especially at that time. It’s very dear to me! Happy 20 years

I think this is a genuinely significant observation that’s more than just ‘oh they have bad taste/no artistic appreciation.’ There’s something going on here with visual language/semiotics that says something important abt right-wing voters. I’m not smart enough to know what it is tho

What has helped me stay closer to hope in desperate times is redefining my hope. rather than being oriented around belief or faith in a good outcome, my hope is a categorical refusal to give up. I continue not because I believe I will succeed, but because even a 1% chance is worth fighting for

NPR reported that because the ERA was ratified after the deadline in the amendment’s preamble, there is an open legal question as to whether the deadline is binding or not. If binding, ratification was too late. If not binding, ERA is law. Archivist is currently arguing the former & not publishing

‘People experiencing homelessness’ is also used to communicate the fact that homelessness is not a static state, & that people go in & out of homelessness. It’s kind of an unwieldy term tho, & from my experience working with people who have been homeless, preferences vary w/r/t preferred terms

Given that many of our best scientific theories were initially discounted & considered fringe/not supported by evidence (heliocentrism, germ theory, continental drift), how should we determine what current “outside-the-norm” scientific ideas to pursue & which to reject?

I found that article to be quite odd & contrary to my memory of 2016 & the contrast between then & now. the vibe has certainly shifted, but the idea that only now is there cultural acceptance of trump’s “off color” persona seems bizarre & does not fit w/ my memory. Ppl loved that abt him in 2016
