Thanks for chatting and thinking about geometry. It’s often left until the end of the year but we can truly embrace geometric thinking every day as it connects to the world around us! In doing so children develop critical thinking skills that carry over into all areas of learning.

A3 when we introduce the rectangle first and then the square as a SPECIAL rectangle because it has all equal sides it helps children
Think categorically about these two shapes and to attend to their critical attributes.

I re-read "Farzanah and the 17 Camels" by @looneymath.bsky.social from cover to beautiful cover. On my mind: "Story and strategy overlap because a key element in hope is a strategy – a credible vision of how to get from here to there." (via weavers.org) #iTeachMath naturalmath.com/farzanah-and...

What are your celebrations today? Big or small win? Where are you seeing great ideas take hold? Teacher excitedly shared with me that a student explained he made a 10 when adding because he found a “2 hiding in there to go with the 8!” Her joy in sharing this was amazing! #iteachmath #edusky #MtBos

🎉🥳 Great day visiting 2nd gr. Student playing game - dice rolled and was to solve 10-12. He said what do I do? Teacher said “you lose your turn bc we aren’t doing negative numbers YET!” She did not say you can’t do 10-12. 🙌👏👏 Not limiting ss w/ math rules that expire #iteachmath #MtBos #ElemMathChat

When we set up the hundreds chart - or in this case the 0-99 chart - like this we keep the decades together making it easier to see the repetitive pattern of 0-9. So all the 20s are together. All the 30s. Etc. we keep the full decade together in the row! #ElemMathChat
Q4: What do you notice and wonder about this hundreds chart? #ElemMathChat #MTBoS

A3: these routines provide a reason to count but also ask higher level questions of compare and contrast and how do you know. The visual helps to engage both hemispheres of the brain. #ElemMathChat #MTBoS
Question 3
Take a moment to answer both of the picture prompts and share your answer. Then, anwer: How do routines that use images help students make sense of counting?

A2 c: number sense - having an intuition about numbers - involves adding purpose and meaning to our counts. Asking the Goldilocks question about numbers helps us make sense of all kinds of numbers! #ElemMathChat #MTBoS
Question 2.c
Why are these kinds of questions important? #ElemMathChat #MTBoS

This is the Goldilocks question examining the relative magnitude of a number. So important to think about the value of a number IN CONTEXT! #ElemMathChat #MTBoS
Question 2.a
When is 6 too much? Too little? Or just right?
