A Hat In Time: I thought this was a good game, but it suffered from the “got too much hype” problem I thought Hollow Knight would last year - my expectations were too high going in and it hurt my experience. It’s a fun platformer but not groundbreaking, and the boss fights universally last too long.

Sonic X Shadow Generations: hadn’t played before. The original was reasonable, definitely suffered from the designs of its time. Did not like that the 2D bled into the 3D but again, product of the time.
Shadow’s stuff was amazing, excellent experience all around. Would recommend for that half alone.

In Stars and Time + Prologue: Super strong narrative experience, did a great job of causing the emotions it wanted. My biggest criticisms are all intentional design to drive the plot home so hard to really call them complaints. Prologue was rougher and I’d go with main if you only do one. Time loops

I’m somewhat curious why my preferences lean towards watching @axialmatt.bsky.social live and @jeremydooley.bsky.social through vods, but regardless, together they’re my most watched creators of the year by a long shot. Thanks to them both for the hundreds of hours of content!

This got a large chuckle out of me because my wife was sick a couple weeks ago and up at 3 am with a coughing fit. Happened to see an ad for a large Spheal plush, and, well…

And Ages, but I always started with Seasons, so it was the “new beginnings” title screen for me…

Aspen is here to help, especially if there are a couple dried flower petals involved for her to…clean up…

This may not be an achievement to the upper crust of speedrunners, but for our casual quartet, this was a massive victory and even though we’ve been steadily sliding down the rankings, the fact we got here even for a moment had us all giddy.

Rest in peace Typhon…I’m so sorry you only got two years with us after your awful first year of confirmed neglect and probable abuse. You were a joy in our lives and seeing you grow into your confident self in our care was amazing. Wish you could’ve had five times as long with us.

Our chinchilla, Aspen, standing on her favorite mineral chew to see just that little bit better from a couple days ago

Bonus: SotE. I didn’t count this as a “new” game since I played Elden Ring before this year, but…yeah. Phenomenal expansion. Can’t say I loved every boss (DBDL especially I dislike) but it had some real gems and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Wish int builds had gotten more though, everything else ate

Dec: The Messenger. This one started super strong. Unfortunately I think it failed to keep that momentum. Platforming almost never asked for new skills after the halfway point, the Metroidvania section felt like padding with next to no new items, and I didn’t finish the DLC for the same gripes

Nov: TCG card shop sim. I’m not a big simulation player but this was a nice, calm thing for a stressful month. It’s obviously still a WIP but what they have is good and I can see myself playing more when I need something super chill but still need to focus in spurts.

October: Tunic. I really liked the manual system, that was inspired. However, as a Zelda style game I felt it fell really flat. Combat wasn’t super engaging and enemies didn’t feel like they were particularly balanced. Exploration was fairly limited at any one time. Golden Cross was genius though.

Sept: Deceive Inc. I love this game for the spy aspect, which meant I had more fun in private games with friends than publics since they didn’t have the playerbase to have matchmaking. Sad to say they just announced the team was disbanded so no more updates, hope for P2P lobbies before servers go…

August: Stardew Valley. I actually briefly tried this back in 2019 as a HM/SoS fan but bounced off it: slow walk speed and a slow first couple days turned me away. Gave it a fair try and I get it now. Only played in Aug and it was my 3rd highest playtime this year on Steam Replay. Glad I came back.

July: Kirby & Forgotten Land. I enjoyed this a good bit, was very glad it wasn’t open world like it was thought during trailers. I really disliked the sidequest system where you literally wouldn’t be told objectives at first to force replays, and postgame was bland. 3D camera hurt boss fights too.

June: Spyro Reignited. I have no nostalgia for this one. As a result, while I really liked the core mechanics, the later games focusing more on mini games and gimmicks turned me off finishing 3. I enjoyed the base gameplay, so needing to stop and skateboard for ten minutes felt like a massive slog.

May: Neon White. I’m not a big shooter player and I’m not a speedrunner. Still had a ton of fun with this one and even got a couple vaaaaguely competitive times. Not a huge fan of all the cards (rocket launcher is pain since I don’t have snap aim) but was way more fun than I expected.

April: Hollow Knight. I had never played it since I’ve had bad experiences going into “universally hyped” games, so the fact it was SO well loved was off-putting.

No, it was actually just that good. Definitely wish I’d’ve played it earlier. Was a highlight of these 12 games across the board

March: Dragon’s Dogma 2. I think this game may have been the best sandbox I personally have played, enemy variety aside. The game suffered a lot if you tried to focus on completing a single sidequest or the main quest, but choosing a direction and just having fun? Phenomenal experience. Hope for DLC

February: Cult of the Lamb. I liked the cult building quite a bit. I thought the crusade sections were pretty bland by comparison, and I really disliked how crusading felt punishing through time passing and Bishop attacks. Did not finish this one as the final boss needed twice my cultist count.
December 13, 2024 at 3:26 PM
January: Super Mario Bros Wonder. Very fun, charming game. Not a ton of difficulty beyond the final two secret levels, but was the most pure fun I’ve had playing a 2D Mario game in a long while. I’m too old for the “well THAT happened” flowers though, made them speak a language I don’t which helped.

I love how the Pokémon Go GMax meetups we travel to (since our local scene doesn’t exist) have two types of people. The ones that SCREAM “I got a shiny!” And the ones that quietly get them only for the first kind to find out and scream for them. Worth a chuckle that I snuck under their radar anyway
