Nice work, if you can get it…

Doing #OutdoorLearning / #PlaceBasedLearning series with a K class—started today w/ a walk to the local municipal park, impromptu Storytime carpet = a tarp, read Me And My Sit Spot as an intro, we gave them a scavenger hunt for #LooseParts play to form their names—Fun!
A picture from above looking down on some kids sitting on a tarp with scavenger hunt baskets, full of leaves, twigs, acorns and so on, using tape dispensers to attach those found items to card stock posters spelling out the letters of their names. Cover of the book mentioned, written by Lauren McLean and illustrated by Anna Panchuk.

The features a bunch of shrubbery in the front left and right corners with trees on either side of the cover, reaching out toward the sky, and the canopy creating some shade below, where a white-appearing child with long, red brown hair sits peacefully on a rock, eyes closed, taking in nature sounds and smells, just being at peace on her “sit spot.” A close-up view of a couple of the student name posters in the process of being covered in naturey loose parts. The centre is a mini clipboard with a mini page of fall scavenger hunt items to search for, which includes grass, leaves, rocks, sticks, etc. One more shot of kids in the process of adding some natural loose parts from their specimen collection baskets to their name posters.

It's not highly illustrated, but has illustrations and photos interspersed throughout. So much engaging content! The series is fantastic--circulates a lot in my elementary school media center with our 4th and 5th graders.

Step 1 in my plan to up engagement & interest in our state’s book award program is underway! Kids loved making pins for Dot Day, so I’m making pins for each of the nominated books. Read a book, get a pin. Let’s see how it goes. #TLSky #EduSky #MGLit #SchoolLibrary
Large whale tail style 1 3/4 inch circle punch next to small piles of circles each with an icon in the center. Icons include a sketch pad, mismatched pair of socks, 20 sided die, video game controller, turtle and compass.

Addresses some common misinformation, reframing the falsehoods w/info from reliable sources & discusses ethical issues around Egyptian artifacts displayed in other parts of the world. Perfect fans of the series & for middle grade fans of ancient Egypt & history in general. (2/2)

HISTORY SMASHERS: ANCIENT EGYPT is a fascinating & informative installment in @katemessner.com's nonfiction series. Thru text, photos & graphic novel style panels, readers learn about history of ancient Egypt, including kings (& queens), myths, mummies, & awe-inspiring structures. (1/2) #MGLit

Kicked off 4th grade crochet club today with 12 excited students. 6 knew how to crochet & 6 are learning, so we paired them up to work. This made it much easier for me to get around to help those who needed a few more tips & encouragement to get going. Great way to end the week! #TLSky #EduSky

No school yesterday, so I picked up a dozen donuts this morning for our building services team for (yesterday’s) School Custodian Day. Can’t do it without them! Got one for myself, too. Nothing like a little sugar rush to jump start a Friday! #TLSky #EduSky #SchoolLibrary

It’s not “silent” but reading is the activity option. 5th grade was actually almost silent. It was the first time for 3rd grade, so I did a lot of directing & redirecting. 4th was a mix of my self-declared OGs from last year catching up with me & chatting about books while others read quietly.

Borrowed from someone else and nothing fancy. One day a week I have the media center open during recess for kids to come and read. They bring whatever book they’re reading and find a spot to read for recess. Had 18 3rd graders, 10 4th graders & 5 5th graders today.

3rd through 5th grade Silent Book Clubs start during recess today! I have a stack of books I’m looking forward to reading. Can’t wait to see what the kids are reading! #SchoolLibrary #TLSky #EduSky #kidlit #MGLit

When we’ve tried to do projects we’ve gotten pushback from kids who want to do their own thing. This year we plan to get them to do 1 project per quarter so they have a finished something. Not sure what yet. Probably a bookmark to start. We have 3 adults with the group and others drop in and out.
loritecler.bsky.social
Hooks/needles and projects stay at school. The ones who are really into it end up getting their own, so this way we don’t lose a lot. Most of the yarn is from neighborhood buy nothing groups.
At the beginning we do how to lessons on the basics & have a digital choice board for reference.

Today was the due date for knitting/crochet club interest forms for our Grade 4 students. I got 25 forms-10 with “experience” & 15 total beginners. Last year the start was hard, but the rewards were big. I assume it will be the same this year. #SchoolLibrary #TLSky #EduSky

In THE EXPERIMENT by Rebecca Stead, Nathan's family is part of an alien experiment on Earth. He begins to suspect things aren't as they seem, leading him to an investigation to find the truth. Mixing science fiction with mystery & adventure, this coming-of-age story is full of heart. #MGLit 📚👍🏻
