Don't give up. As an introvert I have always found it hard to make friends. 2 years ago I moved to a new area and straight away made one of the best friends I've ever had. Sometimes it just takes a little luck to find that person you really click with.

I agree that life situation and power balance are more relevant than age alone after the age of 18. An age gap may be totally fine if the couple genuinely love and respect each other. For others, it could be problematic. Relationships are complex, and it's hard to make general rules about them.
