They don’t really have a root system just persist on the seed reserves until they find a host, the ones I germinated a while back didn’t form any roots

Not sure if it’s been studied in this species, in the unrelated Cuscuta use volatiles in the air and shadows, I imagine something like that could be happening, cause they were all facing the way towards the tree!

And another cool thing was seeing germinated seedlings of Cassytha melantha growing towards their host, which was an already parasites Burracoppin mallee, so I guess on their way to parasitise their parents aha

The biggest of all the #Cassytha! C. melantha, one that prefers trees! This one was smothering an E. burracoppinensis, and was a common sight to see, an impressive species that is found around the southern parts of Australia!

Did anyone say Native Carrot, will it is in the same genus, #Daucus glochidiatus, but yeah no root, but it is a very widespread and adaptable species, I guess if you have seeds that spread via fur you get around far
lost-in-botany.bsky.social
Yeah it’s quite a variably growing species! I seen it in clay soils and granite outcrops as well as the sandy areas very adaptable
