'tis the season for Macrolepiota (or at least it would be if we weren't in drought.) These guys are a choice edible, and pretty easy to ID. Look for a moveable, double-sided ring, 'snakeskin' patterning on the stipe, and white to pale pinkish spores.

Macrolepiota Macilenta

HM.

What do we HAVE HERE. M. griseoviride is supposed to have a Melzer's reaction at the tip of the asci and the specimans from OH that we did micro on are NOT reacting to Melzer's regent

Gonna need to dig down this rabbit hole a little more

I'm assuming they were taken in the 70s (with permission) for his monograph.

When I saw that box of speciman packets, my jaw absolutely hit the floor.

And now I get to help get everything sorted. I'm beyond over the moon excited.

Y'allllllllllll

I had a meeting with a local herbarium today to discuss accessioning some fungi there and to look at the small fungal collection that was donated by a former professor's widow and like...

I thought it'd just be a personal collection.

I didn't expect dozens of holotype splits.

Update.

It's been dry so the moss is a bit crispy but my little Thuja is trucking along

Dandadan? Cleavatess? The Summer Hikaru Died? Takopi's Original Sin?

But yeah, this season is pretty peak.

One of two American Chestnuts of appreciable size that I'm aware of in our parks system (there might be more.)

And by appreciable size I mean like... 10 inches diameter. It isn't big. But it looks healthy.... for now.

I'm going to cry when it starts showing obvious blight.

Is it a small Inocybe with a brownish cap that looks a right mess?

Probably Pseudosperma friable.

But in all seriousness, I should have figured this one out without sequencing WHOOPS.
