Tutkimassani amerikansuomalaisten naisten Toveritar-lehdessä (julkaistiin 1911-1930) pyrittiin aktiivisesti lisäämään naisten toimijuutta yhteiskunnallisesti sekä sosialistisen liikkeen sisällä. Naistenpäivä oli yksi keskeinen tapa toteuttaa tätä agendaa niin ylirajaisesti kuin paikallisesti. 1/3

You know the thing about how the US space programme was built on coding done by women left out of all historical narratives? Well, the closest thing Finland has to a space programme is the first national forest survey done in the 1920s. And guess who did all the maths and stats for that? Yup.

The experiences of foreign “cultural exchange” workers in the US described in this NYT article remind me of those of turn-of-the-century Finnish (and many other) immigrant laborers in North America. The same kind of exploitation happens in Finland today. When will we stop taking advantage of others?

Mulle valkeni tänä vuonna että jotkut lukevat kirjoja niin että hyppelevät ”tylsien” kohtien yli (!!) Enkä siis puhu nyt akateemisesta lukemisesta vaan Lukemisesta. Kohtien yli hyppääminen on käsittämätöntä, olin pöyristynyt. Harry Salmenniemi kuvaa tätä kummastusta teoksessa Varjotajunta👇🏻

On this day in 1920, the 19th Amendment was certified, giving women the Constitutional right to vote. After Congress sent the Amendment to the states 15 months earlier, the National Woman’s Party would sew a new star on this flag whenever a new state ratified it. 🧵

Työväen historian ja perinteen tutkimuksen seuran kesäseminaari oli jälleen oikein antoisa. Esitelmässäni käsittelin sosialistisen naisten lehti Toverittaren syntyvaiheita sekä naiskysymyksen käsittelyä suhteessa alkuperäiskansoihin. Kiitos kuvasta Konsta Kajander!

I’m type A during summer holiday and type B during most of the rest of the year. The shift happens approximately one week after returning to work.

Also: me and my sister. I admire her!
