As the world bears witness to Israel's deliberate starvation of Palestinians in Gaza, the Knesset yesterday voted overwhelmingly to annex the West Bank.

It is a moral imperative for our government to immediately recognise the State of Palestine. History will not forgive us.

An excellent week at @iaspmofficial.bsky.social conference at the Sorbonne Nouvelle campus in Paris. I’m hugely grateful to have been there to speak about my research on @tomrosenthal.bsky.social ‘s cover of ‘Home’ and cover versions as Coronamusic. A joy to see so many fab people there.

What a shitty week for popular music legacy. Losing Sly Stone and Brian Wilson in the space of two days is such a kicker.
I’ve always loved this track, the sounds captivated me from the first time I heard it:

Brian Wilson & the Beach Boys are a huge part of my own understanding of popular music. I discovered them as a nerdy, muso teen. Brian was the highlight of Glasto 2005 for me and I walked down the aisle to this glorious track.

The Madleen and crew have been intercepted after being sprayed with what seems to have been a deterrent to reduce their ability to see and breathe properly. They are unarmed civilians. When will the world act…

For those less familiar with Ireland, the Independent would not be a newspaper of the left - quite the contrary. It's an issue that transcends right -left in Ireland.
Sunday Independent poll.
It could not be clearer, our government is completely out of step with us. We want the full, undiluted Occupied Territories Bill enacted, an end to the EU-Israel Trade Agreement and we want sanctions on apartheid Israel now to stop its genocide of Palestinians. #SanctionsNow

Job rejections are never easy are they, no matter how long the shot taken in application process. Feeling so much like I’m stuck in a strange liminal position where I’m simultaneously over yet under qualified. Too old yet too inexperienced. Too expensive yet too dispensable. #phdsky #academicsky

Can’t help but think that if Starmer was more focused on what’s good for the country and the HE sector here that he’d be taking advantage of this kind of surge in applications too.
And we are EXCITED to see all of you students coming up here! UBC is a great place to live and learn!
B.C. universities are seeing a surge of U.S. students applying to study in the province after President Donald Trump cut U.S. federal university funding and enrolment of international students. Find out more:

I’ve only missed one Eurovision since my first one in 1990.
I was fully prepared to boycott the whole thing next year when Israel were sitting at the top. UK public vote handing 12 points to Israel was only marginally sweetened by an LGBTQ+ winner. Congratulations Austria #eurovision2025

The right actually lost votes in the election. All the Reform gains were cancelled out by the Tory losses--with a difference of a whole one (1) seat. And Labour running as a right wing party lost 160-odd seats, while Lib Dems and Greens won more even than that loss. The electorate moved to the left.
Andrew Rawnsley points out that Labour would do well to take note: voters switching away from Labour as it moves to the right are as, if not more, important than those it could panic into wooing by copying Reform: 3/

This is the single best piece I've read about gen AI because it outlines precisely how it's a *fucking scam* and the "industry" persists because it is a bubble willed into existence by venture capitalists desperate to market a series of dogshit products wrapped in gold foil.
Newsletter: I am sick and god damn tired of everybody pretending that generative AI is the next big thing. The media is complicit in accepting fantastical nonsense - both in the numbers put out by OpenAI and the silly jobs created by Anthropic - and it has to stop.
