‘The actual story is people crossing a stretch of deadly sea, in unfit boats, who can’t swim, who’ve never driven a boat before, with life jackets that don’t pass muster’

If we were any sort of civilised country we’d be doing everything we could to save their lives.

P.s. Migrants prove your ‘value’.
loucalvey.bsky.social
They think we’re all dumb.
loucalvey.bsky.social
Any idea of scrapping of tuition fees is for the birds while government continues an ongoing vendetta against migrants. Universities will struggle to survive the lost revenue from International Students. And that’s parking the fiscal catastrophe fewer Migrant workers pose.

A hotel in Southampton being used to accommodate people seeking asylum has been subjected to an arson attack.

Pure racist violence.

Crikey! Didn’t notice that Tony. Ridiculous

And government refuse to share any data on deaths at our border. So we can’t even track which policies are driving deaths.

What put them in boats? Were they refused a visa? What family did they have here?

Until we answer these questions we’ll never have proper asylum policies.
loucalvey.bsky.social
More lives lost including 1 woman & 2 children.

Government have just closed refugee family reunion (RFR) safe route. 56% of grants for RFR were children & 37% were women. So the number of women & children crossing, and dying, is going to soar.

The difference between having a Labour government and Tory government is barely discernible isn’t Dan?
loucalvey.bsky.social
Government have plummeted so far down the anti migrant rabbit hole they’re picking up where the Tories left off, dusting off their projects and reimplementing them.

They know these sites harm. They know they cost a fortune. They’re doing it anyway.
loucalvey.bsky.social
All these factors massively harm people & our communities. And they all come at an eye watering cost to us as taxpayers.

Which is why Labour always pledged to close them. Now they’re planning to open more.
loucalvey.bsky.social
Meaning government make more wrong decisions, adding to appeals backlog.

Crucially people are unable to learn English, learn about UK customs & practices, unable to volunteer, build social bridges & bonds, damaging everyone’s outcomes.
loucalvey.bsky.social
Unsurprisingly these awful places, in the middle of nowhere, without any asylum support infrastructure, lead to far higher mental health crisis, with suicidal ideation & self harm commonplace.

These sites also make it far more difficult for people to get legal advice…

It’s being reported that Government are about to announce the furthering the use of Barracks to warehouse Refugees.

Ignoring the findings of the National Audit Office report that these are significantly more expensive than hotels. But that’s just the financial cost

loucalvey.bsky.social
We’re in another death spiral of click bait, reactionary policy announcements.

All utterly counter productive to having a calm dignified asylum system that works to reduce irregular migration and maximise good outcomes for the people going through it.
loucalvey.bsky.social
-Changed the asylum support system so folk on £9.50 a week can’t buy snowmobiles, time shares or children’s toys
- They’re considering using actual warehouses to warehouse people

All without any discussion or consultation, all without any evidence based understanding of impact
loucalvey.bsky.social
In the last week government have announced:
-They’re halving the ‘move on period’ for some Refugees, giving them just 28 days to find a home & a job bound to drive a homeless crisis
-Slashing refugee family reunion cancelling all applications, driving more into danger
loucalvey.bsky.social
100% correct. Exactly this. They use people seeking asylum, who are fully subjugated by the state, to test authoritarian measures to deploy on everyone.

Palantir (or similar) holding every shred of one's personal data is deeply problematic.

Billions of pounds spent
on a useless folly is deeply problematic.

The temptation for government overreach or commercial exploitation is deeply problematic.

Theft of this data would be deeply problematic.

We have one of the lowest asylum claim rates in Europe. And yet all they talk about is ‘pull factors’. There are no pull factors which is why we have ONE OF THE LOWEST claim rates in Europe.

They’ll say ‘owt as long as it’s tied to lowering migration & the media will lap it up.
loucalvey.bsky.social
People who arrive are already given an ARC card while they’re in the asylum system, and a BRP. And that’s already chaos! BRPs with wrong names, getting lost, not being issued.

No one’s ever been able to properly explain how ID cards would help with irregular migration?!

‘Starmer plans electronic ID cards for all to help stop UK boat migrants’

I can’t believe this nonsense is back again. A Trojan Horse policy that hoodwinks all of us into accepting deeply problematic ID cards that won’t remotely impact asylum numbers.
