All great shouts and how could I forget Greg?!

I don’t know either but for some messed up reason I want to say Simon Borg?

Hated him on Instant Replay but he seemed well liked and I think went into an editor position quite some time ago.

I should have known by the increased podcast appearance frequency. "Notable paid soccer writer suddenly appears on Soccerwise and/or TSS much more often" is like a canary in a coal mine. Or the Pentagon Pizza DefCon, or something.

Seems like it opens the door to more of a 4-3-3 with DDC and Bassett in front of Chara, Ortiz, or a hopefully yet to be signed 6. With Fory and maybe Bye as better defenders than some prior fullbacks, that could help the lone 6 too.

First , your ability and willingness to hire good soccer writers is really appreciated.

Second, if you break up Jeff & Joe’s MLS Power Hour on TSS I’m gonna be sad.

It’s an amazing double play for Miami. Even when they lose they win lol.

Capitalism!

So yes it’s bullshit

It’s to placate everyone else

I wonder if Inter Miami is running anywhere close to even in an operating sense over the past few years.

Sure they’ve quasi-hacked MLS rules by having the immense pull of Messi but are they *also* outspending everyone else?

Do you know anything about the rumor that Ohio will get an NWSL team? I thought that was dead but maybe not?
January 15, 2026 at 5:05 PM
Wait Alex Bono?!

I certainly want the number to be higher but as far as I’ve seen it’s the second highest transfer fee of all time for someone in her position. That’s not a bad place to be, saying Man City won seems hyperbolic, especially if Coffey wanted to go.

Agree on relevance when it comes to competing for players, I was more talking about the, uh, less critical acceptance of maga players.
January 9, 2026 at 5:22 PM
The rough part of this is I suspect backing away is what a lot of players actually want and we fans are gonna have a real hard time engaging with that.

Not excusing it, just think a level of honesty about the nature of the issue is necessary. It’s not all on Berman / owners.

Watching the NWSL back away from its culture and commitments from five years ago is hugely disappointing. They had a chance to be better and instead have largely chosen to go with the flow at a time when the flow is sewage.

Agreed. I’d also say I think Agoos is cleanly the best GM in Portland soccer right now. I’ve been impressed so far. It gives me some confidence they’ll figure it out.
January 9, 2026 at 3:32 PM
It feels like displaced anger at what this does to the team’s chances of being a real contender this year. What you say about how the team handled it is true, but there’s still the negative impact of losing her.

This is immediately my favorite episode of Soccerwise, no offense Tommy Scoops. More of this.

Also to be specific the Messi draw thing, while real and benefitting the club, is an impact of the league subsidizing his salary. So for me it’s the salary deal that’s the issue. Miami is following the rules otherwise.
January 8, 2026 at 7:21 PM
I fully agree. Don’t see people saying that though. Everyone just says ‘the league doesn’t make Miami follow the rules’ when the owners signed off on this arrangement in the first place. Everyone should be aiming their ire at their club’s owner.
