Once again I'm back at the British Library looking at rolls! This morning I came across a particularly damaged roll with large chunks of it having been ripped off. To keep the roll secure, the British Library had wrapped it with a 19th century application form to buy railway shares as scrap paper!

In addition to visiting archives, I am currently preparing to attend a summer school at the University of Bern next week! It will be a really exciting course on the digital humanities and medieval history which I hope will introduce me to some new methods I could use in my research.

These court rolls tell me what medieval communities considered a crime. We see instances of individuals being fined for dumping dung heaps, blocking gutters, selling unclean meat, and being irresponsible with their fires.

Today I'm at the National Archives in Kew! There are a small number of court rolls stored here instead of the British Library. As I'm only in London for a few weeks, I will be taking photos of the rolls so I'm able to analyse them in more detail later.

This week I am on a research trip in London where I will be going to the British Library and National Archives! Currently I am looking at some account rolls from Ramsey Abbey to see if the Abbey was funding the construction/repair of sewers, gutters, or latrines.
