Yes a very similar interpretation. Possibly a bit more flexible.

#NowSpinning Marcelle Meyer plays Richard Strauss’s Burlesca for Piano and Orchestra, with Cluytens in Paris. What a wonderfully unblended sound this orchestra has. But oh what wonderful piano playing!

#NowSpinning Mahler Symphony No.1. Riccardo Chailly conducts the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra at the 1995 Amsterdam Mahler Festival. This is not the same Mahler 1 as appeared in the recent ‘Chief Conductor’ Edition. So that means there are at least four Chailly Mahler Firsts.

#A-Schubert-A-Day Day 70 ‘als ich sie erröten sah’, D153 from 10 February 1815. Graham Johnson’s essay is fascinating for this one, describing how performances are difficult and can sound inappropriately hectoring because of breathing issues! www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dw.asp?dc=W2...

I am working through the whole box and really enjoying it.

#NowSpinning Dvořák’s Fourth Sympony with Libor Pešek. Although I am looking forward to getting to his accounts of the later works, Libor Pešek has done a nice job job of these earlier works. This Fourth is no exception, though the work itself is a touch loose for my total comfort.

FINALLY! I remember listening to the 1995 Amsterdam Mahler Festival on the radio as it happened. Alas I only became aware of this 2006 box of recordings from the festival after it was deleted. It’s been too expensive ever since. Finally found a good price. Wow what a line-up!

#NowSpinning OH YES I AM. Cracking open the Mehta Warner box and starting with Ravi Shankar’s Sitar Concerto No.2. I’ve heard the First - with Previn - but not this one

#NowSpinning Karajan’s 1970s Brahms 1 and 2. I bought these on my 25th birthday - the very same day that I heard Haitink and the Boston SO play the second live at the Proms - and have never looked back. They still stand up well, though there are so many great recordings now.

…aaaand we have the cheeky cymbal crash. Not sure if I think it’s naughty or not.

#NowSpinning Karajan’s 1970s DG Bruckner 7. I am not sleepy, so I thought I’d put my earphones on and just take it in. I am NOT regretting my choice right now. The orchestra sounds majestic.

#A-Schubert-A-Day Day 69 ‘Minona oder die Kunde der Dogge’, D152, 8 February 1815. Dark, brooding and shadowy, this sing is often ignored or dismissed. www.hyperion-records.co.uk/dw.asp?dc=W2...

Oh yes. Me too. The playing is just stunning.

I’d love to hear what you think of the rest.

Wait ‘til you hear the Romanza’s climax!
loveinner.bsky.social
You can just hear the orchestra are absolutely in the zone, especially at the climax of the Romanza, where the music just takes to the stratosphere. How Pappano generated such a sense of true inevitability is beyond me.

That moment when a truly fabulous new recording of the single work that means everything to you appears. Overwhelmed, to say the least. Amongst the urgency Pappano finds in movements 1, 2 and 4, the Romanza is a jewel of emotional depth and power.

#NowSpinning this new recording of Vaughan Williams’s unspeakably gorgeous Symphony No.5. I have to psych myself up to listen to any recording of this, my favourite single work of all time. So let’s see what this stupendous partnership does with RVW’s timeless masterpiece.

Oh and by far my favourite Karajan Tapiola.
