So deserved: "This outstanding quest set in the dystopian arctic radiates folkloric magic, ecological themes, and the courage of an extraordinary girl."

Thank you @lovereading4kids.bsky.social for this lovely review and for including ‘Why did my brain make me say it?’ as a November debut of the month. Teachers and librarians - I’d love to get it into as many schools as possible. It’s generally aimed at key stage 2 #UKKidLit #EduSky
Why did my brain make me say it? is a key stage 2 poetry collection by Sarah Ziman, reviewed by Love Reading 4 kids below:

Amid current concerns re the decline in children’s reading 4 pleasure, poetry is a bright spot and young readers will be surprised, engaged, made to laugh, and above all entertained by this collection, which is every bit as vibrant as its pink cover.

It starts with a hi-ku and ends with a bye-ku, with a lie-ku halfway through for good measure. The poems are loosely themed around a school year & subjects - all keenly observed- including school lunches, friendships, rivalries between friends, new school shoes and the huge emotion of the leavers assembly. Others detail family life and they’re all inventive, perceptive and often quite moving.

The fun the poet has with words is likely to inspire readers to try writing their own poems too.
