Those routes are prohibitively expensive in my view; they need to be subsidised by the department.

I have to mention before we finish that it is a scandal that the recent guidelines have not referenced the SENCO role. It needs to be recognised, standardised, formalised and supported. The current system is too onerous and the level of support for AEN teams varies from school to school! #edchatie

Listen and hear.

As a parent, even one who's also a Principal, these meetings were terrifying initially. You know you child is struggling & you can't fix it. It's heartbreaking.

I didn't sleep a wink the night before my sons first school support meeting.

Empathise. Listen. Hear.

A lot of teachers who have plenty of experience in SEN would love to become EPs etc. Same for SNAs but there are no professional pathways to becoming an education psychologist, physiotherapist etc. we could also adopt the paraprofessional model they have in the US. #edchatie

The shortage of multidisciplinary professions should be classed as crisis. There are huge barriers to becoming a qualified OT/SLT/EP etc. I know a few people who would love to change careers but it costs €22000 to do the professional conversion courses. #edchatie

I am also an English teacher. You could have 5 separate class groups meaning you could have a high % of approx 150 students with literacy issues etc. Due to subject timetable and AP post demands or you might not be available to meet with AEN dept/AENCO or meet your students’ needs. #EdChatIE

Eoin Lawlor, post-primary, SET and for Autism Coordinator. I feel the Continuum of Support and SSP were designed for primary school. New guidelines point to a need for collaboration and planning between AEN and subject teachers but there is no gain/admin time allocated to our timetables! #EdChatIE

Yep, it really should have got more traction. It sidestepped the pitfalls of portraying heinous people and manages to imbue a degree of humanity and pathos. The acting is sublime and the music and setting really captures the grime and grift of 80s New York. A modern retelling of Frankenstein.
