"I want to encourage a sense of solidarity in my relationships with my authors, and in the ways that we recognize all sorts of disruptions are happening for people right now and how we have to accommodate the work that we do to account for that."

I’ve been lucky enough to work alongside Alyssa (& hope to resume doing so post sabbatical) and she’s wonderful. Quick, clear, and a real lover of authors and books. I hope you’ll reach out and share your sociology book project ideas with her!!

I had a great conversation with Bilge where we talked about the behind-the-scenes details of getting her (now award-winning) book published! Read it and be inspired that you don't have to have the whole publishing thing figured out from day one:

Everything in here, by @lportwoodstacer.bsky.social, is completely accurate. Bottom line for academic authors (and, for that matter, peer reviewers): don't ghost your editors! Let us know what's up!

I hope so (and hopefully they will let me narrate it this time)! No word yet but I’ll definitely share when/if there’s news!
lportwoodstacer.bsky.social
Which is to say I agree with your point and am thinking about how authors can be taught more about the value publishers and publishing professionals provide!
lportwoodstacer.bsky.social
To be fair, presses are not always transparent with authors about who all and what all is involved in getting the book made. I’ve had to directly ask for a list of names of people who touched my books. I think if that list was automatically provided, authors might value those ppl & efforts more

I’m about 85% done with my manuscript but reading Laura’s new book still gave me useful advice. I went back to improve some chapter titles after she convinced me of their importance to the reader/browser.
