These findings support feminist scholars who argue that emphases on women’s consent might typecast them as patients—thus undermining their sexual agency. Moreover, the association between consent and instrumentality clashes with normative expectations about sex, as we documented in Study 4.

Our studies investigated:

b) What information does consent convey?
We found that consent is strongly associated with a patient role and with instrumental desire.
