1. Frog

A small carved stone frog. Lifeless and non-magical. Believed by an entire village to be their leader. Leaning close and pretending to hear instructions from the frog has a 5 in 6 chance of success with the villagers.

Hello! Inktober 2025 starts tomorrow, and you'll once again be using this time to illustrate another of my personal projects: Paws Against the Darkness! It's a ttrpg about the Guardians, special dogs and cats who protect the neighborhood from supernatural threats and the forces of Darkness!

When asked "Why play solo RPGs?", I try to hit:

- Flexibility: play anytime
- Creativity: build your own worlds, characters, stories
- Skills: learn systems, practice GMing
- Focus: center on one character
- Immersion: explore personal experiences and emotions
- Community: share your stories

I think a game loop can do two powerful things: it gives a North Star to follow when in doubt, and it gives a rhythm of tension and recovery. Maybe a loop isn't needed, but maybe other methods for providing those functions are needed if there is no loop?

Looking forward to the post 🙂

👍 yeah I think the myth idea is great for populating a map without needing to detail every hex.

I'm not sure on the dense / sparse question. It might also depend on the terrain - like if you cross a big mountain range, that feels like a significant regional change, but keep seeing the same myth(s)
luckroll.itch.io
Just a thought - the standard is 12 × 12 and 6 myths. That is 24 hexes per myth.
A map with 42 × 42 hexes would still have about the same density of myths and could fit all 72.

🎯

It's an achievement when a group talk about an imaginary world and everyone imagines something similar. To add the expectation of guessing what kinds of things one person might hide in that world is taking things to a whole other level.

"Just tell them" is such an underrated piece of advice for telegraphing dangers in RPGs.

"How can I hint that the hallway is trapped? How can I hint that if they defeat the dungeon lord, they become the next dungeon lord?"

Just tell them. Tell them out loud. With your words.

I played solitaire 🃏 for the first time in awhile yesterday. This is a game in need of some more rules! It can just end in stalemate because of randomness. Why can't I tap the 8 of clubs or something to activate one of my 3 power shuffles?

Thank you! Episode 6 is coming soon 🙂

I fell hard for Mythic Bastionland this summer. Here's exactly how I prepped and ran it (plus a pile of resources). If you're asking "where do I start?", this is for you:

Are you using one of the settings from the book or making something new?

The 3-minute audio track here called "missing part" is why I recommend having a phone recording a voice note as a backup. Originally I thought I'd need to use 20 minutes of the backup, but the rest was recovered by VLC's mysterious ability to open a corrupted file and export a valid version.
A screenshot of the Audacity audio editing software showing three audio tracks. The track in the middle has the title "missing part".

There is something a little sad that when I hear "presentation" my mind immediately goes to the corporate setting. It is so cool to see hobbyists getting together and sharing ideas in this way. It's a great format for learning and discussion.

Our local community had a talk show/presentation last night discussing about Play to Find Out in Tabletop RPG. This is the 5th session we've had. The point is to encourage folks to try out different games and perhaps learn something from them. Because playing different Tabletop RPG can be fun! (1/3)
Screenshot of the Discord room with a screen being shared. The screen share shows the slide that says:

HOW TO APPROACH

"Play to Find Out" isn't about knowing what will happen, but about being open to possibilities within agreed-upon boundaries. These boundaries can be shaped by the system, the setting, or shared expectations." This screenshot shows the slide talking about How to Approach Play to Find Out as the GM:
1. You guide, don't control
2. You manage the table
3. You cultivate surprise This one says:
"As facilitators, we design an experience and guide the table so that the conversation unfolds within the tone, structure, and spirit we've set together. You're not designing a story-you're designing the conditions that allow a compelling story to emerge." How to approach as a player:
1. Be curious about your character
2. Listen and build together
3. Don't try to win-try to discover
