#journorequest: looking for people who work in media/entertainment/culture (broadly defined) to talk about the trend for minority characters to be killed off in stories

a topsy turvey world where calling Reform racist is apparently an incitement to violence but Reform *being racist* is not

This is a really key chart. Look at the difference between concern about immigration between Lab to Reform switchers and Lab to LD/Green/don't know switchers.

The latter group is five times larger.

gonna be posting this over and over again, aren't I?

Wouldn't it be good if the Labour government, idk, made the positive case for immigration, welfare etc rather than just capitulating the narrative to the far right? Hmm?

Can't believe I'm saying this but I sort of feel sorry for the king
lucywebster.bsky.social
would he like to say this publicly?

NEW - A punchy Keir Starmer at cabinet condemns the violence at Saturday's march "led by a convicted criminal" saying they had "sent a chill through the spines of people around the country, and particularly many ethnic minority Britons."

In response to a question about gay marriage, Farage says kids needs a mum and a dad, and straight relationships last longer

Vile, obviously, but also fascinating for a so-called man of the people to be so far from public opinion on this

Here's to hoping the House of Lords gives the Assisted Dying Bill the scrutiny, safeguarding, & open debate it failed to get in the Commons. Lives -- of disabled and ill people, already under attack in this country -- are quite literally at stake.

A crucial Lords committee thinks the assisted dying bill gives an unconstitutional level of power to ministers

The Lords now has the power to do what the Commons failed to - properly scrutinise and amend this dangerous bill

Lords committee suggest parts of assisted dying Bill ‘sidestep parliament’
The Terminally Ill Adults (End of Life) Bill will come before the House of Lords for its first debate among peers on Friday.

If they do call the new DWP 'the dept for growth' someone may have to acknowledge that cutting benefits is counterproductive. But I won't hold my breath

A shame that Lammy won't be shepherding the recognition of a Palestinian state and a shame Mahmood won't be sorting out prisons but have to hand it to Keir, they're good appointments

Rayner had to go but I think we'll miss her voice in cabinet. One of the few political minds, with a strong vision. Whether you agree with that vision or not, no one else in cabinet has one

not sure "we're not the ones referring ourselves to ethics advisors" is the zinger Kemi thinks it is
lucywebster.bsky.social
Don't come for me but I do have some sympathy for Angela Rayner. The trusts like the one she's set up for her disabled son are notoriously complex. I get it

I would potentially have more sympathy if she hadn't been pushing disability benefits cuts

Banning refugees – people whose asylum claims have been processed by a hostile system and found to be legitimate – from bringing family members has one predictable and awful effect: instead of travelling alone, men will bring their wives and children on small boats, and some will drown.

it feels so much worse now because under the Tories there was some hope Labour would improve things, but now what?

I don't disagree with the first two sentences, but I think in general there's been far too much movement from 'not really noticing the problem' to 'despair'. Let's experiment with 'people and organisations try and enforce the norm' and then see if it is actually hard for it to be re-bottled.
jamesomalley.co.uk
I worry that the decades it took to build anti-racism norms are unravelling quite quickly. Clearly the protests/social media drumbeat has created a permission structure that makes people think they can behave like this. Hard to see how it can be easily re-bottled.

Sickening footage from Nuneaton tonight, where a Sky News interview with a local businessman was disrupted by racists hurling abuse.

Another local said, "Warwickshire Council Council has gone to Reform... It's given certain people a licence to be aggressive and racist."
lucywebster.bsky.social
Also basically argued there is no difference between a refugee and an economic migrant which is a take that belongs in Reform

You are in the wrong party ma'am

Absolutely extraordinary to watch a Labour MP on Newsnight argue that family reunion for asylum seekers is bad
