Is there any research on/info about this phenomenon? I don't mean attitudes towards accents in general (overt/covert prestige, linguistic profiling etc) but specifically: the uncomfortable, almost uncanny valley-like feeling of hearing someone that you know talk in a diff accent than you're used to?

Comments included 'This is making me really uncomfortable', 'This doesn't sound like you at all' and 'What the fuck please never do that again', which made me giggle, but also made me wonder...

I accommodate to whomever I'm speaking to, and so I have friends from the UK that only know the 'British' me; and I have non-UK friends that only know the 'American' me.

For shits and giggles, I've talked to them in my 'other' accent, and much to my surprise they had a visceral reaction to it.

Bit of background: I'm pretty good at accents. I used to always speak English with a British (RP) accent, but over the years I've also acquired a general American accent that I feel more comfortable putting on when talking to people who are not from the UK (or Ireland, for that matter).
