According to the propaganda of the Hungarian government, anyone not belonging to the ruling party Fidesz is a warmongering puppet of "Brussels"

However, when PM Orbán repeats the Russian talking points about the war in Ukraine and serves Russian interests, he's displaying HU's proud sovereignty :)

While the Hungarian government's vile propaganda accuses "Brussels" of using Hungarian taxes to pay for the war in Ukraine, today Orbán is in Moscow to meet Putin and make sure Hungary contributes even more money to Russia's war effort!

How do you say "cognitive dissonance" in Hungarian...?

Approaching peak autumn in Budapest!

Being confronted with illiberalism brings out the most wonderful creativity in people, I think. You only have to look at places where this has been going on for a while, like Hungary:

This time the government propaganda lent itself to satire way too easily!

Wonderful! I've "only" been coming to Massolit for the last 10 years, and back then the garden was already fenced in, but still a really cool place!

Do I spend too much time in cafés when I'm in Budapest? Definitely!

The New York Times caught me in Massolit for their feature on Budapest:

Mi artículo "De Fidesz a Tisza. ¿Límites a la consolidación del estado iliberal en Hungría?" ha sido aceptado para este volumen colectivo de próxima publicación en Catarata

En él describo brevemente el fulgurante auge del partido opositor Tisza y el desafío (o no) que plantea al régimen de Orbán

I remain optimistic that this is mosty bluster: Fidesz's own polling must show now it's not the moment for hate campaigns, but to buy back into economically-battered Hungarians' good graces through state largesse (as the "Jó hír!" poster campaign proves).

But if this doesn't work, hate is next

Almost one year ago, I attended an event in Budapest where the Heritage Foundation introduced Project 2025

Tellingly, they framed the need to fire civil servants and replace them with political apointees as a way to ensure "loyalty to the President and to the Constitution"

Yes: in that very order

It's not Easter but Advent and even so a resurrection is happening in Hungary! A political one, that is

József Szájer, the Fidesz ideologue last seen crawling down a water pipe in downtown Brussels escaping from a police raid on an COVID-defying gay orgy 4 years ago, is out of the doghouse and back
