Father to Ava-Jane and the other one who doesn’t want to be mentioned on social media. One-time podcaster, supporter of history podcasts. And I have a day job.
I have been listening and reading a lot on all of this. This episode was the most informative piece I have encountered. Great to have a real expert discussing things. Many thanks.

Is the advice to put the headphones on the little ones’ ears?

A friend of mine’s 12-year old son did a politics podcast - it was cute. And it was better than this.

James, you and I were at that sort of school at around that time - the surprise would have been that the boy who became the man Nigel Farage, had not been a racist bully. There were plenty at my school, including one Rupert Lowe (he is a bit older than me).

I have just read half of it in one sitting in front of the fire, listening to the Beatles. I am loving it and some experiences are very evocative of what we have been through.

I cannot heart this enough! Podcasts are audio! The whole point is that you can do other things. I don’t want to watch two people talking who occasionally say “look at this”.

Ewww - no, not nearly such a good word - too close to muscularity.
December 19, 2025 at 7:53 PM
Nice! There is no noun derivative is there?
December 19, 2025 at 7:49 PM
You just did (if this counts as a conversation!)
December 19, 2025 at 7:29 PM
Or “from this obscurity morbid symptoms emerge”? It would be nice to get “crepuscular” in somewhere for the “chiaroscuro” but not sure it works.
December 19, 2025 at 7:24 PM
Oh wow - they really did muck up the translation then. Google had it as “monstri” - you live and learn.
December 19, 2025 at 7:05 PM
So Gramsci didn’t use “monstri”?
December 19, 2025 at 6:32 PM
I don’t know - there does seem to be something particularly monstrous about the times we are living in and he was watching the rise of Fascism.
December 19, 2025 at 6:31 PM
I don’t know - it seemed apt in 1929 and works for now too.
December 19, 2025 at 5:42 PM
I just checked the Italian - it’s a shame that both lost chiaroscuro (twilight) - not sure interregnum quite works.

"Il vecchio mondo sta morendo. Quello nuovo tarda a comparire. E in questo chiaroscuro nascono i mostri."
December 19, 2025 at 5:02 PM
Thanks - yes that reads much better.
December 19, 2025 at 4:58 PM
What would be an improvement?
December 19, 2025 at 4:54 PM
Bother - I will catch up there. Sounds fun - I am always up for a bit of Sarkozy mockery.

Is that in the paper this weekend? You and @zaltzcricket.bsky.social are pretty much the only reason I haven’t cancelled my Observer subscription. It’s gone quite weird.
