Our “travel” team is the same team I played for as a kid. It went away for maybe 6 years 2010ish, and we think the impact at the HS age has been significant. Multiple winless seasons, and way less participation — especially for girls. We’re hoping to boost participation and keep kids active longer.

So, we actually have a rec league too. Just for kids in town. No cuts. Don’t keep score. It’s also great. “Travel” team is def a step up, probably somewhere between what you know as rec and travel team. I think it’s great if it’s run by the right adults with the right philosophy…

It’s a fair question. It’s mostly 10 yr olds tbh, 4th grade. And it’s a “town team”, travel team is a bit of a misnomer here. All volunteers, even playing time, only during the winter basketball season. You get to represent your town and play some games against neighboring towns.

Like… as a coach, you are not developing a future nba player at 10 years old, but you can absolutely steer a kid away from the game forever at 10 yrs old. Thats heavy.

I’m gonna be the head coach for our town’s 3/4 grade travel team this year, and I feel like this is one of the most high pressure coaching roles in basketball. Obviously, winning doesn’t matter at this age. But I feel responsibility for ensuring these kids develop an enduring love for the game.

I can’t find it now, but I distinctly remember the commissioner making a comment during a live press conference saying more or less what Collier claimed after she was asked about players’ low salaries. I’m gonna track it down. Feel like it was commissioner’s cup press conference or Valkyries thing.
