For me, this is pretty consistent regardless of whether the fic is a one shot, long story, or multi chapter! Typically I know how I want the piece to end, it's just a matter of finding the right words to express the note I feel it's ending on

If the pace of a piece is short and snappy, I tend to give the ending a sense of abrupt finality. On the other hand, if it's long and drawn out and rather emotional, I gravitate towards writing the ending as though it's a sustained, resonating note. --

Admittedly endings are one of the things I struggle with the most!! But I do see them as a way to complement everything that comes before, and to potentially introduce what comes after. This might be b/c of the time I spent in band, but I often try to end my fics like they are pieces of music. --
