Happening now - refinery in El Segundo? Looking north from King Harbor Yacht Club

What will all of us do? NO ONE has a good answer.
But, I can guarantee you, TARIFFS WILL NOT SOLVE THIS.

The political cost is too high to automate the ports - so far. But when that happens, then what do the people do?

It's a question that will be facing more and more of us as not just hand-labor intensive jobs are overtaken by robotics, but also knowledge-labor intensive jobs are replaced by AI.
luminarycrush.bsky.social
Those jobs are then replaced with a smaller number of robot drivers and repair personnel...what then will happen to those workers? No one has any better answer than when Reagan and then Clinton outsourced to China in the first place - "they'll be retrained". Retrained to do what exactly?

If you don't believe me, take a look at a labor-intensive job that can't be outsourced to China - look at our ports. The Port of Los Angeles could be very much automated to increase efficiency, but it's been impossible to do because of the huge number of jobs that would be cut.

The wishful-thinking people will say "they will require mechanics and technicians to fix the robots!". True, but, only a handful, otherwise the automation would not make financial sense. Guys, it's easy math.

Tariffs bringing back massive numbers of factory jobs is a myth.

If jobs do come back they would come back highly automated, radically reducing manpower to run them. That's the only way to make them cost-competitive with near slave-labor in poor countries.. even with tariffs (eg tax) on imports.

I don’t need 30min, you had me at the title. I’ll keep that one in my pocket for people not familiar with the math of our electoral system.
Keep unf***ing!

There is a strain of human that can't imagine the repercussions of things unless it happens to them. It's an acute lack of empathy called psychopathy. While they are handicapped, unequipped to navigate the world or society without eventual self-harm, they will NOT get a blue parking spot.

Most Republicans know this guy is deeply unqualified, but are terrified to cross Trump. The Republican Party is being run like a mob family, and if you step out of line, Musk will fund your primary opponent. Position over country seems to be the way of things there now.

Another way to look at it is that, because MOST people won't know this fact, and MOST news organizations won't point it out, it will look like Trump solved some big problem while his supporters shout "told you so!".

Classic example of making up a problem and then pretending to solve said problem.

The Trump administration has ALREADY SCRUBBED from the National Institute of Justice website (nij.ojp.gov) a 2024 study showing undocumented immigrants commit far fewer crimes than citizens - it didn't fit their lies.

Thanks to the Internet Archive you can read it:

Undocumented Immigrant Offending Rate Lower Than U.S.-Born Citizen Rate
An NIJ-funded study examining data from the Texas Department of Public Safety estimated the rate at which undocumented immigrants are arrested for committing crimes. The study found that undocumented ...

All this tariff talk isn’t hard to decode. Trump has already floated defunding the IRS and paying for everything with tariffs. But aren’t tariffs just taxes on consumers?
Yes! And that’s the point. A flat tax has been the fever dream of the right because it’s regressive. That’s what this would do.
