Hello. Have you been well? It’s a sweltering summer. It’s already been a little over two months since I was discharged [from the military]. I’m here in faraway Los Angeles, living, working, and playing together with the members. It’s truly a strange experience. A kind of unfamiliar feeling, like ‘Bon Voyage in Pyeongchang’? Already sounds strange, doesn’t it?.. Anyway, I feel like I’m moving along busily toward somewhere. Since coming here, I’ve had so much time to think. Every morning I wake up at 10, exercise, eat, then go to work around one or two, come back around eight or nine. Then I sit alone, rather aimlessly, on the terrace of the rented house, and think about past, present, future— these tangled tenses. Honestly, I can’t really grasp onto any of them. Neither laughing nor crying, I’m just running forward day by day. They say the ‘self’ is actually an illusion. Scientists call it the sum of electrical signals across parts of the brain, Buddha says it’s the result of flow and connections. And then I thought… maybe our team is like that too. Not a fixed entity, but something that changes every day? Inside each of our hearts, ‘Bangtan’ must be a sheet of paper of different colors. Even I, at this point, don’t really know what it is, or even what it was. But one thing— as I near thirty, I want to devote myself, feel grateful, for the very moment of making something together with these friends. What our next album will end up becoming— even I’m still in the process of finding out. But while wishing that these shared moments in this faraway place, the thing I’ve forgotten for far too long, may become some kind of beauty, I write this, sitting on a summer terrace. What color are you right now? I miss you. It’s really been a long time, hasn’t it. But when we meet again… it’ll feel as though nothing ever happened. I promise. I’ll fly to you soon. Until then, I’ll do my very best. I love youuu. —Namjoon Kim
