Beyond the whole Demonic Panic that hit the US (in all the years playing as a child and a teen, I never really encountered the moral panic), the biggest thing that killed the D&D cartoon was its basic premise of darkness and failure!

Being in the UK, and in the 80s, I don't think we were ever aware that it was cancelled after 3 seasons. As a child I didn't really understand the concept of TV seasons anyway.
