But doesn't being alive mean being put in these positions? This feels like one of those 'sometimes you are going to be tested, really hard' moments. Like, our path to any better future is made from these kind of moments and choices.

I don't think it's easy. I imagine it would be very hard. Shouldn't we still expect this? I agree that leaders are failing, and the internet is a rage+judgement machine, and isn't it also true that these kids have the right to make this choice?

Were the people that were stopped arrested (kidnapped)? Or did these a$$holes just ram them, threaten them, and then flee?
