how many people believe damaging stereotypes bc it simply agrees with their already-existent xenophobia or other bigotry? even when articles are true, i wonder about how much we collectively rely on headlines and oft-biased articles to tell us what’s going on

i mean, look at the people in the replies who are actually falling for the onion, whether bc they didn’t see the title or aren’t aware of its shtick! not to shame them exactly (we’re all fallible), but it’s a bit harrowing to think about

not to say this is your case, but it makes me wonder about media literacy—how many people would’ve added this to their worldview without a second thought if it weren’t from The Onion? some of the most dangerous propaganda’s what we expect, because we don’t question it/feel the need to verify.
