Welcome to my "Musings" column
One thought I have here is that seniors I know are saying that LLM output is inappropriate for juniors because the bugs are subtle. What if there’s a whole class of even subtler bugs that the /seniors/ dint pick up on?

Part of the problem here is that a lot of the Inherent Complexity looks gratuitous until you have a lot of experience and have had programs you wrote become unusable because of it. I think that's where a lot of the frustration is coming from on the part of experienced programmers.

is somebody calling and threatening every CEO in the US if they don‘t push AI? I don’t think I’ve ever seen these fuckers in such perfect lock-step

They exist, but the only people who can request hits have known them their entire lives. Mafia shit

It’s a beautifully done parallel construction that very precisely contrasts those two characters. Once I understood what was going on it became one of my favorite eps of the show

as though there’s an entire profession that needs as much training as the one they’re already skilled in

Also very classy to replace workers with executives rather than researchers or similar

I'm talking specifically about LLMs as implemented by Google et al.

In any case, I get to reject tech that makes my life worse (if nothing else I'm going to complain about it), and I think that tech optimism is, at best, a dangerous trap.
December 11, 2025 at 2:54 PM
That's already true and already a problem with social media and others. It's just another BIG step towards centralization of control of society.

LLMs are being pushed so hard by big tech and finance due to specific properties they have as technology. They require enormous amounts of computational resources and tons of work categorizing and sorting through their input data. They're part of an attempt to centralize access to computer tech

What made it really clear to me how dangerous this group is was learning that they don’t think sex with women is gay. They think that about specifically consensual sex.

It’s very fucked rape culture.

except that virtually everyone else had similar problems that were mysteriously forgiven.

So now I'm even scared of making posts on social media due to concern about "taking up space." Which seems to be where a suspiciously large group of us end up.

Not the lesbian community, but my local festival community was totally accepting until I had a dr*g problem and acted weird once too often. Nobody ever said anything, they just all stopped talking to me and grey rocked like nobody's business. Which all would have been understandable…

“Doors open and close by themselves. Not as a gimmick, as a statement. You allegedly can’t be bothered with doorknobs. The car becomes your valet.”

You burn to death, screaming and terrified. The witnesses deeply wish you *could* have been bothered with doorknobs.

I appreciate hearing that.

Btw, you're doing good work, and I really want to see you and others like you continue with that (apologies if that is condescending of me :v )

Lastly, I get really angry about what is going on in CS jobs right now. All of the cavalier decisions to kill jobs in fields that people have been directed to for years, where I've seen women and other oppressed people make inroads lately.

2) LLMs are easily anthropomorphized black boxes. There's plenty of those running around already in terms of social media, etc. But this seems to be a particularly effective form.

Of course, I don't know that these considerations outweigh the comfort or other benefits people get out of them.

My big worries about AI have two major drivers: 1) it's controlled (right now) by companies who have a very common pattern of getting people used to their product and then hiking the price to the moon.
Needed to make the investment make sense. It could really hurt anyone who's become reliant on LLMs

I‘ve gotten that message pervasively at various times in my life, so have slowly become close to nothing instead.

culture rules.
