This book is so wise, and helpful, and relatable 🔥

1. It might be too fanciful to suggest that this armorial panel from the old Scottish Exchequer in Parliament Square shows a chessboard in the middle? (late 18th / early 19th C??)

2. The arms for the Instutute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, granted 1951.

1. Chartres Cathedral. The inscription reads “Window of Colin from the Royal Treasury” early 13thC

2. Exchequer of Ireland(Facsimiles of Irish Manuscripts, volume III, plate xxxvii.) 1414??

Richard Fitzneale served as Lord High Treasurer of the Exchequer to Henry II from 1156 to 1196 (following in the footsteps of his father and great uncle) and wrote this in his Dialogus de Scaccario:

As poor Rachel Reeves gets hammered for slightly misnaming the chess championship she won 35 years ago, it’s nice to remember that the word Exchequer comes from the Latin ‘scaccarium’ or chessboard, due to the chequered cloth the medieval Treasury used for auditing Sheriffs’ accounts. (Link in alt)

It’s like those fables when the genie grants you three wishes… and you have to ask for *exactly* the right thing otherwise you end up with an angry wife and a sausage stuck to your nose.

Even the empty chessboard is wrong!!

If autonomous vehicles are privately owned, but parked at that mystical ‘elsewhere’… then the displaced parking problems are going to be considerable, and could well exacerbate certain inequalities.

Scots has a rich & colourful lexicon, which I love, but try as I might, I can’t see it as more than something between a register & a dialect, in its living form. I’d have done one Act for Gaelic, & another for Scots, Doric, Orcadian, Shetlandic, & Galloway Irish, etc #youcanallblockmenow

It’s not on my list #displacementactivity but today I mowed the lawn and tidied the garden, trimmed the hedge, refreshed the hanging basket, tidied the patio, & uprooted* MANY brambles - why did no one tell me it was so easy in December?!

* well, not all entirely uprooted, I’m assuming nothing 😬🧟

It’s not an idea, but a wee plug for the Vittoria Group vittoriarestaurant.com who have started giving away £1,000 per month in cash or gifts after 55 years living and working Edinburgh. Nice to see! #EdinburghHour

Multitasking with chess as childcare isn’t really working!

I’ve been redecorating our small living room*, & it’s like chess - after 3 decisions, 120M more open up - cost, colour, fabric, shape, pattern, size etc etc etc. You can’t see it in advance, & you have to live with it a long time.

It’s been like the ultimate in ADHD for me.

Not sure about the wisdom of holding a tray bake sale in a school that has a stomach flu outbreak, but there you have it.

It gets high praise! Peter Bradshaw calls it “one of the most purely lovable films in British cinema history”.

If I can get a sofa before Xmas Eve, I’ll watch it then!

Great story about the first time #Gaelic is heard in a feature film.

I’ll maybe try to give this a watch over the Christmas period.

I wondered if it had influenced Compton Mackenzie in Whisky Galore, but I see he’d already written Keep the Home Guard Turning (1943).

With the 25% discount*, child & I could 🔁 to London with 2 bed nights for £367.50.

I wonder how many people who are travelling in a twosome (few would want to share with a stranger, I think) are attracted by that price point, + bunkbed.

Seems really finely balanced.
