Hunter-gatherers choose to stay mobile - great article!.

Note: mobile not nomadic. They move through known locations, not merely wandering as 'nomadic' implies.

"The Mbendjele BaYaka have stressed the importance of mobility for the transmission of knowledge." Love it!

Congratulations - very impressive!

I have been through this stage a number of times and it hurts really badly. All the best for the decisions you have to make.

So sorry to read this. Bad news at the vet is very bad news given the incredible role pets play in our lives.

ROCK ART and KNOWLEDGE

Lovely to see rock art interpreted as pragmatic knowledge. The art probably provided more info than the invaluable water courses, as it does with contemporary Indigenous cultures. A wonderful advance on rock art being for nebulous reasons.

Absolutely fascinating article on the way human origins research should be done, and the impact of US research cuts to this research.

Physics, glorious physics:

Two of my heroes: Stephen Hawking and Albert Einstein shown to be even more brilliant than we already knew. (I taught physics for decades):

First, gravitational waves proved Einstein correct. Now, they’ve confirmed Stephen Hawking was right about black holes.

Really interesting - thank you!

I agree totally, but I am only able to be confident about the timeline for which we have concrete archaeological and anthropological evidence. I have no doubt that will go back further with time, and when archaeologists start considering knowledge systems in their interpretation.

PODCAST - UNKNOWNS - Origin Stories
I am on an episode of the Unknowns podcast, for the Big History Project.

It was a real pleasure talking with David Christian, founder of Big History about the incredible memory methods embedded in Indigenous traditional knowing.

Exactly. And so many communal rituals are the repeating of songs and ceremonies which store fundamental and pragmatic information on which survival depends. They didn't just wing it!

Golbeki Tepe like monuments a-plenty! Missing from this fascinating article is acknowledging that the discoveries match the way knowledge is stored in oral cultures. Sophisticated memory systems are known from Indigenous cultures globally - including stories that date back thousands of years.

Wonderful to see Indigenous languages being preserved - of course - through song.

It is the 'knowledge gene' which is a critical part of the story of why humans have this unique ability to store knowledge aided by the memory skills embedded in music.

FRACTALS and CHAOS

Lovely to see fractals and chaos theory still making news. My masters thesis was on using them in education for kids who needed enrichment in maths and science. I still find them engrossing.

That simmering dread you're feeling, that choked-up sensation, that stomach upset, that unsteadiness and uncertainty, that doubt always in the corner of your mind, that taut-wire feeling, that lurking constant low-level anxiety -

It's fine, it's just repressed rage.

I've just returned to fiction after a long spell of writing non-fiction, and I identify with that overwhelming feeling of characters being so real. I planned this after my YA novel was published in 2003, but got sidelined. They emerged as if they had just been waiting! Wonderful, isn't it?
