Shimon Sakaguchi is the Distinguished Professor at the Immunology Frontier Research Center, Osaka University, Japan.

As of 9:11 AM EST I’m waiting for the news to appear on the ISB website. Hey, Lee Hood — wake up your media people!

A fantastic day for science communication, when writers like Liz Fuller-Wright show how important their work is. Up early at the Princeton University Office of Communication, Liz wrote about the Nobel going to Princeton graduate alumna Mary Brunkow.

Princeton alumna Mary Brunkow *91 receives Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine
Brunkow received her Ph.D. from Princeton in 1991 in molecular biology. She shares the award with Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi for discoveries about how the immune system is kept in check.

It’s a great day for American Science and innovative companies like Sonoma Biotherapeutics, Inc. (San Francisco) and Institute for Systems Biology (Seattle).

Did a woman scientist win the 2025 Nobel Prize? YES! Today is a good day for women in science. Dr. Mary Brunkow was awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with her two male colleagues, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi.

Where can you find Dr. Karikó now? At University of Szeged in Hungary and on lecture tour.

Francis Collins, former director of the National Institutes of Health, retired in 2025 after severe funding cuts and muzzled from talking. So he’s writing a book!

Everyone was thrilled when, the day after the meeting, Dr. Karikó and her colleague Drew Weissman were awarded the Nobel Prize. Their research enabled the development of mRNA vaccines, saving millions of lives from the COVID-19 pandemic.

That's Kati talking to Dr. Francis Collins on Saturday, September 30, 2023 @cshlnews.bsky.social (CSHL). They both gave talks at CSHL the weekend before the Nobel announcement.

Who will win the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine tomorrow? Will it be a woman? Like Dr. Katalin Karikó, who was awarded the Nobel in 2023. I had the chance to speak with the amazing “Kati” Karikó just two days before the announcement.

It’s super-easy to buy my books, notecards, fine art prints, and Rebel Artist stickers from my online store at: fellmanstudio.com/shop/

Did you get your flu vax? I got mine, and then the nurse and I exchanged stickers. She looked at my Rebel Artist for Science stickers and said, “This one — American Science is our National Treasure,” and promptly stuck it on her uniform. “Where can I get more?” she asked.
lynnfellman.bsky.social
“Would you like a Rebel Artist for Science sticker?” “Yes,” said a guard at the National Academy of Sciences. “May I have two?” She promptly slapped them on her security officer uniform. We laughed, and said, “We support science. We stick together!”

Nicolle Wallace interview of Joan Baez. Ms. Baez was an anti-war & civil rights protester & singer. I was fortunate enough to see Joan Baez at a demonstration in DC. Don't self-censor or self-destruct. #MuchRespect #StrongWomenRock

Who is Rebel Artist? I am—Lynn Fellman, artist and author. And "Artist" is a character in my books on genomic research who refuses to be contained by ink and paper. We venture out together into real-world labs to visit working scientists and report back on their extraordinary research.

IMO, this is MAGA strategy to intimidate and demoralize scientists. Take away funding, force relocation, disrupt ongoing research — tactics that are undermining scientific research. This makes me furious. After all, scientific research is America’s National Treasure.

NSF's mission is to advance the progress of science, a mission accomplished by funding proposals for research and education made by scientists, engineers, and educators from across the country.

The NSF is in limbo — funding cut, jobs lost, and getting kicked out of their own building. @policyhound.bsky.social Jeffrey Mervis reported in “Science” that NSF's 1500 employees were taken by surprise by their eviction.

Happy for my dear friends and colleagues @paleogenomics.bsky.social & @fsanchezquinto.bsky.social and their team, who just published a study @science.org describing the genetic diversity of mammoths 🦣 found while building an airport in 🇲🇽. DNA usually does not preserve well in warmer climates

Promotional graphic for Paul Turner’s Scopes Symposium lecture titled Evolutionary Medicine. On the left, Turner is shown speaking at a podium, wearing a striped shirt and gesturing with his hand. On the right, the text reads “Paul Turner – Evolutionary Medicine.” Logos for Vanderbilt Evolutionary Studies and the National Center for Science Education appear at the bottom, along with a small photo of a scientist holding a vial.

I get a fierce sense of joy learning from women in science. Like Elizabeth Barnes and Julie Phillips at the Scopes "Monkey" Trial Centennial Symposium. Elizabeth’s (Liz) presentation, ”An Atheist's Unexpected Path to Promoting Harmony between Religion and Evolution," made me think and think again.
