I really wanted to add some #poetry to the prose, and so it happened.
Here’s another one for the #vss365 train #aphotic and #whistpr #perch

I call it “In Tow” 🌊

My heart, it perches
at the rusted verge of
trust — a concept foreign
to someone whose chains are
as familiar as the rising sun.
It had only just begun
to know its own beat,
differentiate it from the sweet
and calm echo of your caress,
wherein lies my true distress.
I used to know every crack
of this aphotic sunken wreck,
the chaotic corners of grief
were a lonely, but safe reef
in the depths of my stormy sea.
Did you hear it, that plea?
I’ve always wanted to share it
just never dared to dare it,
and now you’re here and I don’t know,
with everything I’ve got in tow,
just how to let you in,
maybe I’ll just have to let you
win.

For a creature this entangled with the shadow world, I had expected for his eyes to be void of light. I had expected something like black marbles, no reflection, just two vortexes that will suck your life force away, the longer you look at them. Something dark and appropriately dangerous.

Instead, they were anything but aphotic.

They were bright, in their darkness.

There were lights, playing in the depths of them. Like slow, liquid lightning playing behind thunderclouds, changing colours like birds of paradise when perched in the light, then dipping into shadow. Something about the colour sequence felt so familiar to me. I say sequence, yet I noticed no pattern. Golden, green, blue, sometimes a fleck of reddish orange whenever I said something that would make him choose to hold his tongue, instead of prod at trauma.

Moments like these, when they seemed struck by some mysterious light source from behind his irides, and were directed at me, and me only, moments like these I simply was unable to look away. I tried telling myself it was because that light in fact made them more dangerous than if they had been soulless orbs, and I needed to keep a close eye on them, but somehow I knew, I was just kidding myself. Any reasons I could make up to keep staring at him were silly excuses. Excuses that served me much more than they did him, for he knew, without fail, and to my chagrin, when I was not being honest.

His voice was low, just a whisper dripping from the night. "What is it you are seeing in my eyes tonight, my little disaster?"
His question made me realise the obvious: when you gaze at eyes, they tend to look back. I clenched my teeth. "I'm trying to figure out what you're plotting." This was not dishonesty.
He chuckled. A short flicker of orange told me he knew exactly that, while it was not dishonest, it wasn't the entire truth either. And yet, he had generously decided not to tease me about it.

$The orange got swallowed up by a billowing wave of cerulean blue, and it felt like a piece of my soul was getting tugged at. I swallowed. Had I really been staring at his eyes all this time? I could not remember a moment that I was not. I felt something hot crawling up my spine. And still, I did not dare look away when he leaned in the tiniest of fractions. Not close enough to touch, not at all. But the proximity of his eyes made it seem intimate nonetheless. I felt the sudden need to defend every percent of my space. "Don't... Stay where you are... not... closer..." Even I understood that, if all I could muster was random stammering, it was far better to keep my mouth shut. So I shut it, embarrassed. "Aha," he simply said. I almost expected some sort of 'instructions unclear', but he did stay put. Neither leaning in further, nor giving up the space I had mistakenly thought of as mine. I took a deep breath, then blew it out aiming at his face. He grinned more. Did he time his inhale? Fuck that. I took another, quick and bracing breath, and repeated myself. "Well? What is it you're plotting, then?" He laughed, distant thunder across mountains, and, finally, leaned back. "Oh just your eternal demise and surrender." I am still not sure if the surging feeling of my soul leaving my body was due to his words, or the fact that while he was saying it so casually, his eyes were finally leaving mine, and a moment after, he disappeared into the shadows. It felt like something I hadn't known I needed was being ripped away, and it would not return during the entirety of his absence. And I wanted to hate myself for every goddamn second of it. “You need to stop this.”
“This? This being what?”
“Whatever makes everyone flock to you like you’re some goddamn idol.”
He couldn’t help but snicker at the word ‘goddamn’. He tapped his chin thoughtfully. “Ah yes. I may be damned, but I am no idol.”
She raised her eyebrows. “Yeah no, I said like,” then shook her head, “I don’t know. You’re just too smooth I guess.”
A dry, short laugh. “Aye. Well. It’s all part of the mask.”
She looked at him wordlessly, the way she did when questions swarmed her mind.
He shrugged. “You know. Suave and confident, all powerful, mischievous, dangerous… all that,” he gestured. “It’s part of the play, the mask.”
A sudden discomfort flooded over her. Why did it sound he was rejecting about everything he had ever been, to her? Was it all just an act? She had felt a strange sense of security in the predictability of him being… impossibly frustrating. She hated it, but it also felt… home. It felt that with one casual sentence, the walls in that home had began to crack. She shifted uncomfortably. “Uh… but… I mean… that is you, no? It’s not just a mask, you are that?”
Again, he shrugged. “Maybe I am. Maybe I am not. Which mask are you wearing today?”
She blinked.
“Writer? Warden? World-Walker? Witch? Woman?”, he enumerated, “…Human?” The last made her flinch.
“I am that.”
“Possibly. Are you all at the same time? Or are you switching masks?”
“Huh…”
“They all belong to you. If you choose them to. However, are they you?”
“I thought so. Are you asking me of my essence?”
“Mmhm.”
“What do you think my essence is?”
He smiled softly and tilted his head. “You, in essence, are something precious.” In one smooth motion, he closed the space between them, two fingers lifting her chin to meet his eyes. And when he noticed her breath hitch, he added quietly “Something… that belongs to me.”

The murmurations of sensations
rushing through my nervous system
bursting, to my exasperation
from the pores of my skin
dedicated to shattering the resolve
within
my eyes flutter
my heart stutters
all those matters that
I’ve been trying so hard to hide
flushed into the open with one single stride
You placed yourself in my back,
breath in my neck,
hand at my throat and
and you know as well as I that
this is what they call ‘in check’
I don’t dare breathe
I cannot move
all that I do — entirely up to you
“Get out of my dreams,” I say
you laugh “Oh you know
that I will stay.”

Sometimes we don’t realise what we are swallowing with a smile filled with the joys and hopes of a fresh start, is indeed toxic.
We don’t realise, before it has lodged itself in our insides, refusing to leave while dripping acid into our guts, dissolving our very being drop by drop, from the inside out.

Sometimes, the bitter flavour is too well masked.

Sometimes, the poison just smells too good.

Sometimes, we fall for it, still.

Sometimes.

But this time, it will be you doing the swallowing. And I will hold your mouth shut until your eyes water, and the foam drips from your lips. Until your body shivers and spasms and collapses on the floor. And I will smile.
